it has been 200 miles so far and no check engine light appeared so I guess a new cap solved this problem for me

Bumping this as it is relevant to my problem.

So when I was getting my RX8 out of my garage this spring the car started and ran but the idle was constantly fluctuating. On the second start the car refused to idle at all.

Came onto the forums and found some threads recommending to clean MAF/IAT and the throttle body. I cleaned them both and the car idles beautifully. A day later my car threw a CEL. When reading the code it pulls a P0456, Small Evap leak.

I checked my gas cap, it was lose. Tightened the cap and the cleared the code. A day later the P0456 was pulled again. Bought a new cap without a tether and cleared the code. A day later the code has been pulled again.

Is it possible I loosened a line when I cleaned the throttle body? Not exactly sure what I should be looking for in the engine bay.

Should I just get the car taking to a shop to get a smoke test done?

Thanks.

Hey I have the check engine light on. I took the gas cap off and put it back on and tightened it a lot. I heard you are suppose to cycle your car 10 times before the light goes off. Does this mean fully turn your car on and start the engine or just turn it on so all the lights go on? Any help would be great.

Thanks

I don't think it takes 10 cycles, but it does mean driving it a bit, then parking for a while. The ECU monitors evap system pressure while parked, and throws one of those codes if it leaks down.

Why don't you have the code read at Autozone or someplace that does it for free?

There's a TSB and a special program (MSP13) on the gas cap. If you look those up they should help you figure out what's happening.

It is always helpful to list the specifics of your car: 2005 GT, AT,...

Please run a google search using the query rx8club.com RX8 wiring diagram or run a search using the query box above.

It's a 2004 RX8 manual with 64k miles. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it but all of a sudden the engine light keeps coming on with the EVAP code P0456. I've already replaced the gas cap and it is still all after they cleared the code. Is that more info for you?
