Have you checked the oil level? The car uses oil by design so you need to check it and top it off somewhat regularly.

If the light's coming on and the oil level is at the full mark on the dipstick, take it to the dealer as the oil level sensor could be malfunctioning.

If the oil is low, add oil until it's full and read your owner's manual.

C-Mac--How long since your last oil change? On average, the 8 uses about a quart of oil about every 3,000 miles, so if you don't check your levels every so often when you get gas, that light will become a familiar occurrence. Unfortunately, the 8 is probably the only car in the world that really does need to have its oil changed that often.

I'm bad at checking my oil, and that light comes on near oil-change time every time. Like your situation, the light goes away after I drive a short distance, but it comes back on next time I start the car. Keep an extra container of non-synthetic 5w20 in your trunk for safe measure.

Ya this has happened to me but my oil was low. Check your level and add oil accordingley. If no change, SEE YOUR DEALER! Good luck

Check your build date too. This happened to me before they replaced my oil pan. It was really annoying- I'd check the oil, and the light would STILL come on intermittently. If your oil level is okay, and you have an earlier build date (before December 2003, I think) you may need the oil pan replaced.

Call me goofy, but I'm guessing you need to check your oil with the dipstick, and most likely add more.

But, that's just me.

Seriously, you should check your oil at least weekly with this car, and add enough periodically to keep the oil at the "full" mark at the dipstick. I add about 2 oz of oil every other week.

I'm still going to assume the obvious that you DID check your oil level. I think it'd be pretty dumb for someone to post this without checking it first- that should just be the obvious answer. I took this to be "it's not low and it's still coming on." If that's the case, you may need to have the oil pan replaced. there's a TSB out for the earliest versions- the sensors in the oil pan didn't work as they should have and gave false indicators all the time- like mine did.

Also, a loose wire to the sensor will do that. I read on a thread that someone had hit a chunk of debris on the road and that caused the sensor wire to go intermittent and the check light to flicker.

Dude, you gotta take care of your car. I don't even have a rotary car and I check my oil every couple fill ups. If you need help on how to check the oil just ask and we will be more than happy to give you some advice.

Didn't the dealer tell you at delivery that the car uses oil as part of it's design and that you need to check it regularly?

Also the gauge has nothing to do with the quantity of oil until the oil pressure starts dropping from lack of oil. If that's happening, you've already likely damaged the engine.

if your car was built before December '03 it may be caused by the defective oil pan. So when you fill it up to spec, the light still comes on. It can get really annoying.

C-Mac... oil level in any automobile is one of the most basic things. You always need to periodically check your level and get regular changes to make sure you keep everything running properly. Don't rely on your car to tell you when something goes wrong! I hope you picked up on everyone's good advice from the above posts...

im planning to bring my 8 to the dealer tomorrow for check up.. my car is at 3200 Miles right now and hasn't change oil yet... they advised me to change it at 5000m so i followed... did u have your first oil change at 5000m?.. so i guess all of you are putting extra oil if needed..like i said in my case im not checking my oil regularly and the only way for my oil to be change or to be check is when i will bring it for an oil change once the mileage is reached.. also im in the Blue8 Team and lives here in Chi-town... just give some advise or things that u think i should consider you know... big thanks...

Please check your oil level ASAP. If your engine locks up its your fault and won't be covered under warranty. Rotaries need oil, and your should check it every 1000miles.

I usually add a quart after 1000-1500 miles. Lately since its been so cold I've been really bad about it, but I keep 2 quarts in the trunk just in case.
