Cleaning out the Air Conditioner
How hard is it to clean out the cooling/heating system? Can this be done in the home garage?

What exactly are you trying to do?
If you just have an odor, turn the AC on fresh air and the fan to 4 and spray lysol into the air intake below the outside of the windshield.

Along with that, try turning off your AC, turn onto fresh air, and turning your fan onto 4 for about a minute or two before shutting your can down. The fresh air will dry up some condensation that gathers up in the vents. That condensation can get funky smelling after a while.

A tiny grey mouse slipped inside in front of the fan! And then died!!! The heater helped dry it out so it now smelled of jerked beef, and dead mouse! The chilled air tends to get it damp and increases the bacterial activity so it smells of really dead mouse and jerked beef -
Fabreeze can only make it smell of jerked beef, big foot, and really dead mouse, all cavorting in a field of flowers near a chemical factory, on someones old sofa! Even Blue Eyes cigar would be preferable!
I've simply got to remove the little dead body and sanitize the equipment! If it's a simple task the white cane garage will work - other wise I must consult my Dealer and my long suffering insurance provider - So anybody ever take one of these devices apart?
And stop laughing you guys, or I'll put a penny in your hub cap!

Offerings of incense to dead mouse will not help - will just smell like hippies roasting a dead mouse - while sitting in a Fabreeze meadow on an old sofa near a chemical factory. These are potent little brutes and it will take years before bacteria convert it into gases! It's not going away until physically removed!
I just wish I could get my photographs on line - I have filmed every animal except big foot trying to examine the car - the surface makes a mirror that seems to attract them! But this tiny mouse bomb I would not wish on my best enemy!

Thanks for the thread it was so funny it took away much of the pain - interestly the mouse problem occured right after we took the car in for the recall and had the air filter changed - I wonder if that could have given it the opportunity!
For a tiny organism it packs a heck of a smell - I think this keeps us from eating them -
Even with both windows down and the roof open and no air conditioning on, it makes the car almost undriveable! I can now believe that Urban myth about some guy who died in this real cool car and no one would buy it except some kid with sinus problems - so he had it for a song, but no one would ride with him!
I am tempted to give it to my-sister- the- troll and buy a new one for myself!
But I think I will begin by making it all shiny and then giving my insurance rep a ride around the block -
This conjures bad memories of taking my boss out in my old VW bug when I had it loaded with garden supplies - bags of steer manure and fish emulsion - what made it worse was the passenger window was jammed shut - there are times when life lacks dignity!
Thanks for the specs - I will check them out....

Don't know how far the little bugger is in there, but you might just try removing the glove box and pulling out the cabin a/f... (If you don't know how - search in the DIY... I think someone posted pics.) You might be able to fish him out w/o any further disassembly.
When I put in my aldehyde a/f, I discovered something had been gnawing on the original factory filter and some of the sound deadining foam on the damper door... No mouse smell, so, I guess he got his fill of paper & foam and left.....
Oh yeah - that reminds me - if you remove the a/f, and you don't see the critter, turn on the ignition and toggle the fresh air / recirc. button - that moves the damper door right next to the a/f. This also might expose your problem....
Good luck!
