Here's the deal. Go with the R3. It's different, has some improvements over the other models, and should retain its value a little better since they are a "special edition," if you will.

As for your deal, I really think you can do better. The market sucks, the RX-8 is extremely thirsty for 93 octane, and it's a niche car. I would see if you can find any others within a hundred miles of your location and threaten the dealer to walk if he doesn't sweeten your deal up. You really can do better. Good luck and let us know what happens! We expect pics either way.

I took to 2 months to buy my 8 from the dealer, I let em stew for a good while, the longer you make them wait, the more desperate they become to sell you the car. No matter how much they say "there's only 1" "it'll be gone soon" it's b/s, and if it's not, well, sucks for them, they lost your sale.

Take your time, wait till you either sell yours privately or until they reduce their price or offer you more for your car.

I cannott decide between BLACK,RED or the COOL BLUE?????? they all look great .Thanks much
get a better credit rating before you buy a car, perhaps your cayman put you in this predicament??
in any case with your credit score i wouldn't be buying a car in todays economy

all said and done get the R3 waste some more money and fuel our economy!
seriously or just wait to the 2010 model

Since when? I bought new '04 for $28k late in 2004 and KBB on it is still worth $15k private party sale. I'd say 50% retention value after four years is pretty darned good.

black - for the subtle look, the curves and edges don't stand out, same with the airvents on the side if you're getting an 08

white - bold, but does not scream look at me.

i'd get an 08's just cause they look better

an 09 if you want modifications, it has a better base of 3rd oil injector, and better suspension, a great jump start at having a better rx8.

Good luck getting $15K for an '04; check a few threads below this: '05 GT black, 2-tone leather bought on ebay for $13,000. In for sale section: '05 GT titanium 4900 miles asking 15K. KBB's just a rough guide, not an exact science.

Oh yeah, '04s are a 5 year old car now. Sucks, because that makes my still-pretty-new-to me '05 4 years old.

Question to Jagger- is your Cayman a '07? And was the $54 the sticker or the price you paid? If you're effectively getting $41,000 worth of tax-free trade in, I don't think it's such a bad deal. Although like others have pointed out I'd sure test the private party market. Who knows, maybe you'll be able to get someone to buy it for $43K. Although I doubt it, because I've seen 07 S models priced close enough to that and most everyone would opt for the "top of the line" model. Now that I think of it, why didn't you spring for the S?

If you really are in need of cash, then forget about buying a new rx-8. Get a used rx-8 upon selling your cayman privately. Or better yet, get a first gen Miata. Those are fun little cars.

I know you didnt get screw yet. but if you rush, Im sure u're going to get screwed.

U should really sell your car private. Forget about Tax credit and shitz. I mean you want money going into your pocket faster? right ? So sell it privately, it shouldn't be hard. and you will have more cash in hand instead of some stupid *** broke government credit.

Dont buy that R3 at sticker. thats a big rip right there.

Just curious but why is the choice a 09 R3 and 08 GT? Why not a 09 GT?

Well I have an affinity for The R3 .seeing that I have a Porsche I have to justify buying an RX-8 and the R3 satisfys me .19"Wheels ,Gas shocks some cool looking exterior Trim and Ricaro Seats ,I am working a deal on the only blue one within 200 Miles(Oregon) or so of WA . The Rotary Motor ? I could go on and on ..

Make sure you deal, be firm, they will sell this to you for close to invoice if youre serious and stern and know what youre talking about. From invoice I would put down at least 2-5,000 dollars. Then pocket your 5K from the Cayman and call it a day. That is the best financial decision you can make if you want new.

Next best is buy pre-owned. You can find a nice used 08 with low miles in the 20's.

Consider all avenues before jumping into serious inequity.
This guy is right on point. Be very careful and think long and hard before you do this. First, be sure that your job is recession-proof. A lot of people have gotten themselves into deep yogurt by buying stuff that they shouldn't have. A credit score of 660-670 means that you're paying well above-average interest. Think about a quality used RX-8. There are lots of them out there.

YMMV.

Well you know you can get at least get a decent deal on an 09 GT because ebay now has one for 3 grand off it's list as a buy it now option. (ebay prices are a fantastic way to negotiate btw beacuse you can show them proof of what you can get the car for and make them beat it)

Whichever model you choose, make sure you get it somewhere in the late 20s as far as price goes and then go with it. I wouldn't worry though if you're about 1k off from the dealer if you really want it.

I would say wait the dealer out. I looked at an r3 a couple weeks ago and the dealer is currently offering me 27,500. So you can definitely get it for below sticker and invoice. I say wait and see what you can get.
