I used to think it was what the guy from Rosenthal Mazda said on one of his posts about the car using lean mixture. This would sometimes cause the engine to make a squeaky drive belt noise or ticking upon startup or sometimes during accelaration. This made me feel like it was normal but I've been listening to it more often and I don't quite like how it is sounding cause it doesn't sound normal.

i just remember something.... right before the noise started to happen, i was blowing leaves/dirt away from my driveway. I aimed the thing under the 8.. maybe something got caught in the belts or something.. I dunno.. but the noise is gone now and i have no idea why..... hey... its freaking 5am on saturday.. couldn't sleep all night.. and i'm at work now.. so don't expect anything smart coming out of these brain cells..

I just noticed the sound coming from my 8. Any real explanation, or at least some bullshit explanations from the dealership?

Odd -

My car just started to make an RPM-dependant ticking sound as well.
However, mine occurs after the motor has gotten good and hot.
It appears to be coming from the vicinity of the rear leading plug.
I'll get a good track on it soon with a piece of rubber pipe.

I'm a new member to the ticking cub!

It is definately a new sound, i'm very in touch with this stuff

I too (like Mazda Maniac) noticed it when my car was very hot after a 200 mile highway ride. It is RPM dependant as well.

The next day (today) I noticed it again on a cold start. hmmmm. It went away after 20 minutes or so.

Its been a month since this thread was started...anyone have any info on what it may be? Dealer BS or anything?

MM....How did your plastic pipe thing go?

mine actually stopped doing it for some strange reason.. and i didn't do anything to fix it.. nto even look to see where the noise is coming from.. maybe it was a cat that was inside the engine and it finally got out.. who knows.

I have found the source of one "ticking". This weekend I started the car after it sat out in the texas heat (porch temp read 102, car read 101) and heard a god-awful TICK TICK TICK. An aquaintence standing near said, "better get those lifters looked at or your valves are going to get screwed" ...so you know what it sounded like.... Inspection of the engine revealed a part on the intake runners was ticking...must be that solenoid...if I pinched the hose running to/from that area, it quit ticking and the engine hiccupped once then adjusted. ticking came back when I released my pinch and the engine idle smoothed out. Drove home. Let car sit several hours, started it and it ticked for about 10 seconds and then stopped ticking. Hasn't come back since (and its not as hot outside).

I'm speculating that it was some sort of adjustment for the ambient air being so hot.

ticking device is front center of the black plastic runners, with and electrical connection to the left side of if.
