condensation on left tail light
Hi all,
I just got my 04 rx8.. i found out that my left tail light has condensation in it.. and the small light is out(the light on the side, not the main brake light... i think there are 2 bulbs in it). so, my questions is, how do I take the whole tail light out and then clean it and put it back in? any video on that or detailed instructions...also, what bulbs do i need to replace the light?? because I i think mechanics charge ridiculous amount just to do that..
since im already posting one thread, I also wanna ask is there any general ways of taking care rotary engine so that it would last long?? thxx

Use a shop vac to suck the water out of the light then clean the gasket. Once the gasket is dry put a ring of caulk on the gasket so when you press back in it seals against the body of the car. I did this 5 months ago and my tails haven't had a drop of water since.

I zoom therefore I am.
+1 for not drilling holes. search for the threads about this and you'll find a good walk through of taking the light off and drying it out.. even a thread with pictures about installing the gasket.

I have an 04. I had about an ounce of water in both tail lights last year causing excessive condensate on the lenses. I removed the tail lights (not hard to do) drilled a small hole in corner of each lense to drain water. I let them dry out for a day. Then I sealed the outside perimeter of the lense gasket with clear silicone seal. I just applied the seal and finger spread it along the edge where the lense meets the black base. I did'nt have to remove any gasket or seal. This solved the problem. Be carefull drilling the hole. Try to do it in a inconspicuous spot. I like the wetvac idea to remove water in lense. It will dry out faster. If you have the dealer do it out of warranty it will cost $300.

If it doesn't light up when you step on the brake, then it's not a brake light. Is the light you are talking about red? There are two small red LEDs mounted on the strakes inside the taillight. These are actually the rear side marker lights. As they are LED, there is no way to replace them. You have to replace the whole housing.

The LEDs have a seperate small plug to connect wiring. Maybe if lights were removed to fix condensation issue they were not plugged back in. On mine it was a small white plug with two wires.

My dealer told me my car was out of warranty so the tsb no longer applied. he gave me an estimate of $160 for one light to be repaired. He told me about drilling the hole and recaulking with silicone after I about fainted after hearing the estimate. That's why I did it myself.

I had the same thing happen to me when I got my car (just got it in December) and the dealer replaced it for me for free, since it happened when they were detailing and cleaning my car.
