Contest: Shortest distance covered before the fuel light comes on
Here's one you can all join in on when you get your cars. I was driving it really hard over the weekend and on a full tank of gas only made it 274km! :p
This was 50% highway driving and 50% full throttle hard acceleration and braking on my favourite twisties. Great fun - I love the DSC - the car is so chuckable!

So hows the car feeling now that it has a few thousand clicks under its belt? Engine loosening up? Does it feel more responsive?
BTW whats the octane rating of the petrol in Japan? 100 or 98?

Miiles per tank is meaningless since different vehicles have different tank sizes. For comparison, a Civic has a gas tank that's roughly 13 gallons (I believe) whereas the RX-8's gas tank is roughly 16 gallons, making the 300 miles per tank number more impressive in a Civic than it would be in the RX-8. In any case, MPG should be calculated, not miles per tank.

damn man your civic sux. My protege will pull 300 miles in the hills of tallahassee and 400-450 highway per 12.5 gallon tank. And my reted mpg doesn't break the 30 mark either!

*ahem* fuel consumption is greatly influence by driving habits, as JSG makes evident here.
i wonder how bad it could be if you never got out of 2nd gear for legal driving??

Slightly off topic (our thread may get moved) BUT,
I can beat all of you. My Volkswagen Beetle TDI goes over 450miles on a tank (14 gallons) and thats 100% harsh Altanta traffic commute. I drive Miami to Atlanta all the time . . . I would leave with a full tank, fill up in Valdosta, GA and drive straight into Stone Mountain, GA (700miles) and still have 1/2 tank left.
BTW: This puppy is for sale. A great deal.

i have a 2001 eclipse with 17 gallon take and ill be lucky if i get 250 mpg city. Thats why im getting rid of it its full of problems. highway if im lucky i might get 350 maybe.

at the least we should be talking about mazdas.... just kidding. this thread is being hijacked into a "What's your current MPG?" but seeing as how (practically) none of us even have the RX8 yet, we can only compare.
my mx-6 (V6) gets about 27 mpg on the highway and 19/20 "in the city". i know i will be missing the fuel effiiciency once I get an 8, but hey, you've got to burn more fuel to make more power (164 hp vs 250 hp).
wow. to beat the 170 miles though. it shouldn't be a problem: i'm sure i'm going to love the 8 so much, i spend all my waking (and some sleeping) hours in it. i'll just start it up and live in it! hahahahaha

My 5 cyl. 92 Vigor gets about 24 mpg in mostly freeway driving. So the change to the 8 won't be much.

At the Sebring Raceway, I got a whole 68 miles from full to a quarter tank. You never want to go lower than a quarter tank on a racetrack. It will cutout in highspeed corner. BTW, All Civic MY 1996-2000 have 11.9 gal tank.

What sort of cost is petrol in the States and Japan at the moment? In the UK we are paying approx 74pence per litre so to fill my current car (Volvo C70 T5) which has a 70litre fuel tank takes about £52 ($87 or 10,268 Yen).
I currently get about 29mpg (thats motorway driving at an avergae speed of 90mph) so with my commute to work I have to fill up every 3 days!
So with a combined mpg of 24 predicted for the RX8 in the UK owning it is going to be an expensive business.
At least I don't have worry about it for a few months - the UK delivery for the first orders has been put back to Late October from an original date of July....

Well, in our WRX, I managed to empty a tank full of gas in less than an hour. Flat out on the Autobahn, the tank (55l) was empty after 226 km (IIRC).
It sounds like the RX-8 might be just as bad or worse ......

I have to emphasise I was really going for it! Werner beats me but the contest is only open to RX-8's!
In normal driving (which I try to avoid!) I get 350-400km a tank rather than the 274km of my record attempt.
I'm not sure of the actual octane of the high octane gas here but it's supposed to be higher than the UK, which is 98 I think? So maybe 100? It's good stuff. Filling a 50 litre tank costs me around Y6,000. I think it's generally Y110/litre then you add tax etc.
Someone resurrect this thread when your cars are rolling.

that still makes me sad...it seems to work out to 13-15 MPG?!? That's pretty bad considering I drive my Z28 (which has more power and torque) a bit hard and still manage 16-18 MPG.

When comparing mileage figures between the US and everywhere else, don't forget that the US gallon is smaller than the Imperial gallon - 3.385 litres vs 4.545 - so UK MPG figures should be approximately 20% higher than US.
