i dont know if the eclipse and rx8 are the same
But with my 2001 eclipse gt the gas light would come on and i would still have over 3 gallons left so maybe thast the case with the rx8 so instead of of getting 15 -18 mpg for 15.9 gallons u might get that for 12.9 . just a guess but thats how my eclipse is. Because when u see the gas light come on it dosent mean u have nothing left it says u r running low refill its a safty measure.

That said, my gas mileage is still terrible because I get ~250 miles per tank, so figure... 250/14 = ~18mpg. But the problem is because I have a bad knock sensor, and it should remedy itself when I get that fixed.

I wouldn't know... my low fuel light stopped working like 5 years ago :o Gas around here is $1.29/gal for 87 octane. To throw this in, just yesterday I got 28.5 MPG (!) on my RX-7 doing all freeway driving. I can go about 350 miles before hitting the E mark (2 gal left) on a 16.6 gal tank.

My current Miata gets about 32 mpg (13 km/l) when driven conservatively with the top up. Driving quickly through the hills gets me about 24 mpg (10 km/l). My Miata has been retuned to use 92 octane. Driving the RX-8 is going to hurt a little more slightly I guess.
Gas prices in SoCal for 92 octane ranges about $1.80 to $2.00 a gallon. Or $0.47 to $0.52 per litre. "Racing Fuel" at 98 octane is like $5 a gallon, or $1.32 per litre. Fuel prices are cheaper then Japan, but 110 octane fuel isn't readily available over here... so our US cars are probably in a lower state of tune. oh well.

What size tank are we talking about for the rx-8?
My old FD with FMIC, exhaust, boost, intake and standalone (no closed loop) could drink 70litres in 290km. That's heavy traffic, AC on, with many many short full throttle bursts.
A guy I work with has a 20B Cosmo that can suck down around 80L in the same distance.
In short:
JC Cosmo (worst case): 3.6km/l
Modified FD (worst case): 4.1km/l
Stock FD (normal suburban): 6.7km/l
Stock FD (highway): 9.2km/l
-pete
EDIT: I should point out I never drive conservatively even for the highway figures.

I get 26 mp/g in my 1993 mitsu 3000gt w/ 156k mi on the odo. base 3.0L v6 225hp 205 lb/ft The rx-8 will be a little more rev happy and hopefully a little more responsive in the twisties , but I am not looking forward to a possible decrease in fuel economy on a $30k investment with ten years better technology. AS long as it's not too much different the fun and uniqueness factors will far out weigh the efficiency issues-- even though I drive about 500miles a week ![Wink](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
that means one fill up of the 20gallon tank a week Usually for $1.60 a gallon for 93 octane premium
