Convince me to get an RX-8

So here's my story,
I live in Canada, and I'm moving to a place up North that I don't see a lot of cars on the street. I only see mazda, nissan, mitsubishi, and GM dealers around here. Currently, I drive E92 328, and it is an awesome car. It won't be good for me to bring this car to where I am as there will be no BMW dealership to take care of my problem if something arises. I want sports car, but I'm not sure if RX-8 is the want for me. I read a lot about rotary engines, their tendencies to "suck" oil, and bad fuel consumption. Other than that, performance and handling are great. Maybe... my choice is down to Lancer evo or RX-8.

You gotta tell us a bit more for us to help you. What are your priorities? How do you approach maintenance?

first off if you're comparing evo to 8 that is apples to oranges... (performance wise) I know I bought my 8 for its uniqueness not for good gas mileage and oil consumption

Rotary does consume oil. But "suck oil" is not a fair description for the RX-8. Oil consumption for this engine is modest. In my experience, 1 quart every 1200 miles in the City, one every 2500-3000 miles or so highway. Check the oil level every 500 miles or so (every other fueling), which you should do with any car, frankly. Top it off as needed -- not much of a burden.

.... and bad fuel consumption.
EPA 18/24 Real Life 16/23

Other than that, performance and handling are great. Maybe...
No maybe about the handling, it's fabulous. This car is all about the turns. It almost knows where you're going before you do. It's incredibly forgiving of mistakes. Iirc, it was the ONLY vehicle , bar none, to receive a 5-star rating for resistance to rollover. Plus, the brakes are outstanding.. If you want a stoplight dragster, go elsewhere.

my choice is down to Lancer evo or RX-8.

Thanks for all your input.
I live in vancouver, but I"m moving to the north side of alberta. There will be a lot of snows and -40C weather there. But the snow will accumulate very slowly as it doesn't rain that much there. I will test drive rx8, probably next week and see how it goes from there. I probably shouldn't worry too much about maintenance as I usually don't keep a car beyond its warranty. Here is why I compared evo and rx8

rx8 is unique, good-looking, and sporty to me. I have heard about its unique driving experience as well.

evo will be an advantage as it has AWD, and it'll probably handle better in snow.

I'm test driving both cars to let you all know of my experience.

If you still living in Van Couver, I would definitely recommend the Rx8.

However, as much as I love the 8, for the great north alberta, an EVO will give you much more active safety. EVO are much better in harsh weather purely because of its drivetrain. Watch some WRC race in snow and then you will know.

Either way, both are great cars

both require higher then normal maintinance, both cars are high on insurance, but living where there is snow...... the evo can sport a fully loaded roof rack with snow boards and has a nice trunk and rear doors that can open without the front ones needed to be open first. if your going to have to drive 1 car, get the evo. if you have a daily driver and just want a second car, get the rx8.

apples to oranges, strawberries to bananas....

The 8 is an awesome car and a blast to drive. In good weather I would take it hands down over the evo any day, but for you since you are moving to northern Canada where I'm assuming it snows a lot, i would recommend the Evo. In wet, icy or snowy weather the Evo is definitely out perform the 8 because of the AWD. That is unless you want a car to play around with on nice days and have something else for a daily driver, in that case get the 8.

In bad weather I would take the Evo, but if weather is no issue, I'd take the 8. I currently have a beefed up economy car, and despite the fact that it goes like the dickens and handles reasonably well, I would take the 8's fantastic seating position and driving feel over cars that are much faster. It may not be the fastest car ever, but it's just such a pleasure to drive that it would be hard for me to pass up.

Thumbs down

Anyone else sick of people who need to be convinced into buying an 8? If you're not sure, look around the board for awhile or test drive one. I understand being unsure but is someone really going to be pushed into a decision based on opinions of other people on a car forum?

What the hell... I'm getting nothing!!!

To the OP: You don't need to ask questions about the 8, just drive it. I've ridden in two generation of Evos, they have NOTHING on the 8.

Again the same question which you haven't addressed, will this be your only car? if so then forget it, if not then give it a shot.

however the rx8 is never going to compete with the evo in any way except for looks, and in that case it'll always win hands down.

I'll even say that unless you're going to be close to some hills with some winding roads, don't really bother getting the rx8 because if you can't take advantage of the twisties then you can't really experience it as it deserves.

I agree that an Evo or WRX/STi would be more fun in this particular weather.

Go see the Pros

As we all know vehicle purchases are highly personal experiences involving a persons needs, wants, and individual means. This process includes research, comparisons, test drives, and in this case includes owner opinions, however if you really need "convincing" that the RX8 or any other car for that matter is right for you, then by all means seek professional help.

What sort of professional help, you may be asking yourself? Well naturally you want the best, the brightest, the most knowledgeable professional you can find..right? No, not by a long shot. You want a " Salesman"!!! ( or saleswoman of course) But no run of the mill salesperson will do...no,no,no ....you want a " Car Salesperson. These "PROFESSONALS" will stop at nothing to convince you that the car of your choice is the best possible vehicle you'll find. Not only will they convince you of the car, they will also attempt to convince you that their price offer is the lowest price possible. So low in fact that they will probably be be fired for offering it.
These highly motivated, highly imaginative, and highly unethical individuals have altered the course of history with their uncanny ability to convince others of virtually anything. And long ,long before the invention of the automobile. In fact we can trace their skillful manipulation of others back to the oldest, furthest, most distant mythological events in history. Take for example the frequently recounted story of Adam, Eve, the Garden and the Apple. Legend has it that it was " The Serpent " or " Satan " who convinced Eve to trade in Paradise, Eternal life, and union with God, for an apple, a fig leaf, and reservations at a popular tropical destination (HELL). I happen to know that it was, in fact, a guy named Can Tankerous who closed the deal, thereby receiving a "Salesman of the Millennium" award, a front row parking place, and executive washroom privileges for life, not to mention the commission on every lost soul until the end of time. He's a legend and his descendants, numbering in the millions, occupy positions of power and influence all across the planet and beyond. However the highest and most evolutionarily advanced of these descendants, " the Car Sales Man " has honed his craft to an art so fine as to dazzle the most guarded of buyers.

Well there it is. There's your answer. If you need convincing......They've got just what you need..........but only for today.......no guarantee it'll be here tomorrow.....they're moving fast....etc....etc...etc...............

Im in the same boat too. Convince me!! I have a Jeep Commander now. It's a lease and Im just about done with it. Im tired of trucks and plus chrysler stopped leasing so Im looking to buy my next car. Im ready for a sport car. I also have a sportbike (2007 zx6r) and I love hitting the twisties and trackdays with it. I really wasnt in the market to buy a rx8. I have seen maybe one or two around and had no ideal what car it was until I got close to it but I knew it looked bad ***!

So last week im thumbing threw one of those free used car books out there and I come across this black 2004 rx8. I circled a few cars in the book but when I saw the rx8 all the other cars didnt matter. Everything about the car is new to me. I checked it out on you tube and found out a little more about the car. Now I really want it!!

My question to you guys is:

1. Is the insurance rate really that high?

2. Are there any common problems with that year that I should be aware of? Like after 60,000 miles the engine has to be rebuilt. JK...but seriously

3. Are they fun to drive? Im going to test drive it monday so I'll probably be able to answer this one myself.

Even the RX8 haters agree it is a great looking car.
Mazda now warranties the engine for 100K miles.
If you want more power you have a fair choice of forced induction choices.

I prefer the Pettit S/C
Turbos make more peak power, but the S/C is so linear in it's power delivery.

It's is going to be hard to get ppl on here to suggest anything other than the 8 remember you are on the RX8CLUB FORUM....remember that either way bother are good cars but for snow driving of course the AWD Evo will do better either get snow tires for the 8 or a beater to drive on bad days....oh and the oil is not sucked i ususally put a qt possible a qt and a half between 3000 mile oil changes

"Convince me to get an RX-8"

this statement alone should be answer enough on whether you should get an 8 or something else.

Like Smokey the Bear says, "Only you can decide if you should have an RX8 or not. Only you."
