Cost to own
Hello Club,
I am doing more research on the RX-8. What is the cost to own an rx-8? what are you paying in repairs per year? I am not worried about cost, just what I need to budget.
Thanks!!

Well...obviously all unexpeted maintence is all pretty much covered under warranty.
Depending on if you change your oil at 3, 5, or 6K, it's all dependant. Point being, it's not gonna be any more than any other car, if that's your question.

Other than that it's just going to be the luck of the draw. The RX-8 isn't really much more expensive to work on than other cars save for the fact that most people will be stuck paying dealer prices for anything engine related that might need to be done. Also, wear items aren't any more expensive that other comparable cars and in some cases are cheaper (you should see what brakepads for Brembos can cost).
The RX-8 certainly isn't going to be the most reliable car you can own. But as long as you're not unlucky you shouldn't have any major expenses for at least the first few years of ownership.
So, if you like the RX-8 the best of the cars you're considering and can handle an extra $500 a year for oil and gas then go for it.

Thats what I thought, I'm trying to do as much research as I can, this being my first car. I really dont want to mess up. I will try and do my own oil, I know how, and have done it. I will need to get a nice jack though....

Jacks are cheap.
but be prepare that you really have to put more attention to this car(if u're getting it)
not alot more, just a little bit.
Doing engine oils are easy, Tranny and Rear diff might be a pain, but still fun. Get a FutomotoValve for the engine and it will be alot easier.
ahh saying too much, talk till you get the 8.

The December 06 issue of Kiplinger's gives maintenance costs (as well as stuff like insurance cost and 3/5 year trade-in values) for all of the current cars. RX-8 does not stand out in either direction.
Take the car-specific numbers with a huge grain of salt - they give 5 year trade-in values for cars that have only been on the market for a couple of years. And there is a current thread that proves there is no typical insurance cost. But the numbers in that magazine will give you a feel for the cost of owning a car.

I still got to remember to look there, hay maybe Nalin's photo's are hiding.
You forget many of the members are young and not old like us SO.......
Insurance plays a big part. You'll make up the MPG and save money if you take that into account if your younger. Plus they're probably not married.

The '06 will at least give you a 50k miles BtB warranty. They're going 3/36 for 2007, plus a 5/60 powertrain.
In the future my site will have repair costs. Still looking for a few more RX-8s before I start collecting data on it.

When we get an year average of $4 gal, then the delta will hit $500. This guy plans to drive 20 k miles a year. At the end of 4 years, vehicle depreciation is going to hit his pocket alot harder than gas costs.

Combined with the extra cost of oil and look at that, it's ABOUT $500 a year... Just because you drive like a grandma and got 25mpg in your WRX and 21mpg in your RX-8 doesn't make my numbers a stretch. Even if you're right and gas costs ad up to $400 a year difference I'd suggest you work on that **** retention problem of yours.

Make sure to check with your insurance agent regarding your insurance costs first. There seems to be quite a bit of variability there between owners. I only pay about 700 a year but i'm an old fart and married.
