Cruise overshoots on resume

I set the cruise to, say.. 80 on the freeway, get caught behind a slowbo and cancel. Traffic clears, hit resume. About 60+ % of the time, the car zooms to about 84/85. It stays there for about 10 seconds, then slows back to 80 over about a half mile stretch.

I searched the existing threads and haven't seen anyone comment on this. It it common? Is it feature, bad sensor, ???

I think this is normal for almost all of the cruise control systems out there. It happens in every car I've driven with cruise control (2003 and 1994 Honda Accord, 1993 + 2003 Toyota Camry, 2000 Ford Crown Vic, 1992 (??) Plymouth Voyager). They all overshoot the target speed and creep back down to it when I press resume.

I've had overshoot of 1-2 mph on previous cruise systems, but they recover quickly. My 8 takes stays at +4 mph for a significant time and very slowly recovers. The speedo drops one mph about every 8-10 seconds. Previous cruise controls were back at set mph within seconds.
