Unhappy The Cursed RX-8

I have been long awaiting the arival of the RX-8, and after much looking, anticipating, hoping, and saving money the day has come. About 16 Days 20 hours and 36 minutes ago my dream came true, I was the proud owner of a brand new base, 6 speed, titanium gray, RX-8.

That day was short lived, less that a week later someone did a hit and run on my car in the parking lot, severly scrachting the front bumper.

A week after that I am driving on one of the roads in San Diego where everone decides to reset the speed limit to twice what it should be. I am a cautious driver so I go into the left lane and go the acual speed limit behind a large truck. Suddenly, a large tire tred, and I mean HUGGGE, come from out of the bottem of thew truck. I attemp to go into the other lane but there is another car, I begin to brak but the person behind me who is tiryng to break the speed limit almost hits me, i am forced to hit the tire. After runing thru the senario in my head i realise that I took the best alternitive. It did not do anything to the front or the mid and rear undercarage, but the front undercarage is completly smashed. I will try to post pics as soon as I can borrow my friend digital camera

I absolutly love this car, its a treat to drive, a true piece of history with its desing and engine, but by this time next year the will be nothing left of it if this carnage contiues.

My real question is does any one know how much it costs to replace the undercarage plasice parts and the bumber section where the front rotory symbol is, and if anyone knows how much the front bumper where the mazda symbol resides costs, I think that peice goes from end to end, so it basically is the whole front 1/10 of the car.

Thank you very much,
Adam Fischbach

Adam, you should surf the classified ads here, and eBay; maybe even post your own wanted ad: Find someone with the same color car, who just got a body kit and replaced his front and rear bumper covers, and buy the stock ones from him. They bolt right on. I bet the underbody parts are pretty cheap, and again bolt right on.

Nothing personal, but it sounds like you drive very slowly. I don't know if I have ever seen a speed limit I thought was too high; almost always they're too low IMHO, at least for a good sports car. That car is made to take curves at speeds that are typically much higher that the posted limits, and are MUCH higher than the black on yellow speed signs on curves (which are purely advisory, not legal prima facie limits).

I don't know exactly what my point is here, but I do hope you get out of the way when someone's on your butt. It's no fun driving through twisty roads at a snail's pace. You might try opening it up just a little if you're comfortable doing that, or (if not) maybe taking a driving school to get more comfortable behind the wheel.

Just my two cents. It would be a great investment in your enjoyment of the car. Good luck and take care.

Excellent, Adam! That car is just too nice, and too fun, to drive slowly! And I bet you can find those parts pretty soon.

BTW, I have some friends in RSF, who live right off the Del Dios Highway. They told me traffic there is getting completely absurd, because the city won't install a light in town, so it backs up for miles at the stop sign. Go figure.

P.S. I would check out Trussville and Rosenthal Mazda (they both advertise on this site) and price the new bumper covers. They might not be too bad.

I try not to drive next to trucks for that very reason. I've seen tires come off of semis too many times. I've been lucky to avoid them.

Given the choice of having someone rear end you because they are following too closely (not your fault) or running over a road hazard (your fault), next time you should avoid the road hazard. Then, you won't have to worry about the cost of the body parts - their insurance (or your uninsured motorist coverage) will be paying.

Sounds like all the issues would be covered by insurance... And I don't think rates will go up since you are not at fault. I had similar incidents and my rates stayed the same.

True, but than also theres the guilt part you have to live with in case anything happens, say he hits the brakes, someone rear ends him...looses control off the highway...rolls over....or hits a tree and dies...i rather hit a tire and repair my car than have someones life taken..especially if theres kids in the car behind you.

Agree with JOe399 there.

San Diego has its share of drivers at all speeds. Why be one of the jerks who is driving slow in the fast (aka passing) lane? No offense to you, but ANYbody who does that is being a jerk, doesn't matter if there are two lanes or six. Maybe that guy was so close behind you because you were going too slow.

PS, the "safest" thing to do according to the DMV would be to jam on your brakes if you think it would avoid debris. If the guy behind hits you, that's his fault. You're not supposed to drive based on the people behind you, unless they have a badge and the lights on the roof of the car are FLASHING.

O Sorry

I did not realize this until it was brought up, I had moved form the left to the right lane because traffic was fast. so the accident happed in the right lane

Sorry for that detail I hope that clarifies confusion.

Thanks,
Synergy

It's bumper. With a P. Bump-er. Something that absorbs minor bumps into stationary objects. Can someone please tell me where this "bumber" stuff has come from? Are our public schools really this bad?

Okay, I'm calmer now. Hope you get your problems squared away.

I would much rather hit some road debris, than risk some type of catastrophic accident with someone behind me. I think you made a good choice, although its a bad situation!

Off topic, the worst is when you're on a road with two lanes, and two people going the same speed just sit right next to each other, blocking off the road!

Welcome to the new car club

I've been keyed, lower front area torn by flying wood panel (below front rotor), and fendered in parking lot.

The main thing is always your life - in spite of it all.

Sorry

Wow RodsterinFL I feel really sorry for you, and your poor car. Keyed, bumped in a parking lot, only then to have a piece of wood come and nail you nail you (I know that pun was bad), I quess all I have coming for me is the keying.

Maby I should start a thread about how Many things has happend to one car, post the results after so many weeks.

O by the way, your in first!!!!

And you are right, Human life is the more important that the car, risking a horrible accident isnt worth avoiding a smashed bumper.

The "comprehensive" portion of your auto insurance may take care of the costs here, for the tire tread damage. Similar to the way insurance covers the cost of a cracked windshield due to a rock. At least that is the way it has worked with my State Farm Insurance in the past. Also, this doesn't count as an "accident" on your insurance rates as it wasn't your fault. Good luck..
