dang, CEL on at 14,450 miles

oh boy.

Ive been babying this car, oil level is good, etc etc. CEL came on today, at a whopping 14,450 miles. I am going to autozone tomorrow to pull the code, and take it to the dealer on Friday.

think its cause im pumping 89 octane?

anyways ill keep you guys updated.

okay so i got impatient and went to autozone that was 24hrs closeby.

seems its P0455
"The PCM has determined that a large leak exists in the evaporative emission control system"

EVAP Large leak detected
1- defective gas cap
2- EVAP canister broke, hose cracked or not connected
3- Purge or vent solenoid defective
4- Vacuum leak at engine

I didnt run a search yet (but I will, tonight or tomorrow) on it.

I had the autozone guy clear it. I checked the gas cap, and it hasnt come back for the last 4 miles

Let's see what this is...

Ahh seems like this is a recall. I need to check my vin, to see if my car is affected and if i can go in for a new gas cap. might change it myself since its only 10 dolla...

i retightened the cap, but it IS flimsy...it clicks to infinity and doesnt really stop turning. mines an 06 shinka

you are doing a great job with no help.. helping yourself.. you should teach a class in that..

two notes...

do not baby the car. drive the crap out of it often. the car likes it. it will do better in the long run..

also dont sweat the 89 oct.. just make sure you buy quality fuel... i run 87 just fine, but it is good 87..

beers

My CEL light came on again yesterday too. (Always get a sick feeling when that happens!) Taking it in to the Mazda dealership this morning to pull the code before work.

FYI
Get an ODBII scanner before warranty ends so you can pull your own codes and not worry.
I have a Scan gauge II and will recommend it

Nine times out of ten this symptom is resultant of a poor gas cap seal. As we know, modern emissions controls demand a sealed fuel [vapor] system. Caps really should be better made. But at least they're cheap.

Good job on the self-diagnosis!

I cancelled my appt. with mazda because it ended up being the gas cap here too. Never would have imagined, since I hadn't stopped for gas in a couple of days and had been driving it, but figured "wth" after reading this thread. Retightened the cap, and CEL light turned off. Glad I didn't drive up there to look like a jackass over something so trivial.

Nice work. First 3 posts all by you - asking a Q, finding the answer, then providing yourself with the solution.

A+

Thank you everyone for your comments on this thread. I had to "vent" and actually resorting to typing it out on this forum seemed to help because it's seen by quite a few rx8 enthusiasts.

Thanks again guys

also im glad someone else here (Rx8Jenn) caught their gas cap as the problem. sheesh, never had a car like this lol

Clear the cell light. Re-tighten the gas cap.

Works most of the time.
