3.3om a gallon!! I live in Sydney Australia, we aren't as backward as some think.. Right now it costs about US$4.50 a gallon for 95 (I spend about 90 us a week on fuel)! But as everyone has said, I'd prefer to go without a few things and drive this creation the way it was meant. For me (ive had 2 Rx7s and was the first car I owned and drove) the handling and feel play a big part, but its also the fact that it's so uniquely different, that you see another rotor on the road and you acknowledge each other - you don't see people in Type R's paying any attention to each other, mabe they do? don't want to find out though!!! Love my 8, flaws and all.

I was waiting for a thread like this. the rx8 cost $4k less than it's direct competitors but gets 5mpg less on average. I can buy alot of gas with $4g. My 8 also saves a couple $100 a year on insurance cost and it does run on regular gas. My 8 is more afforable to own than any other sportscars and is as much fun and attractive to own. The civic si is not a true sportscar and is not in the same class. I don't compare the 8 to economy cars. They are cheap crap. The 8 is the most economical world class sportscar to own when you factor in the above.

We regularly make trips of 800 miles and I compared the extra cost of driving the 8 compared to our Forrester. My highest reasonable "premium" for taking the 8 was only $25 with $3 gas. We're taking the 8 as long as no blizzard is predicted!

While filling up with gas.....I constantly have to explain that this is really just an 04 Mazda and not the latest exotic sports car. This car is worth every penny.

Any car that shoots three foot flames out of its dual exhausts is probably not tuned to squeeze out every single mile per gallon.......

Wow, this is like a lawyer defending a mass murder by saying that "ya he killed a few dozen people but he is really a great guy who is a great still live painter".

Folks look at the simple facts.

- The Rx-8 is a fun car to drive, no arguments.

- The engine is small and light which is a contributing factor to its fun.

- The rotary is at least 15% less efficient then a piston engine.

- The rotary has very poor torque.

- No other car manufacture uses a rotary because of it's limitations (Poor power out put per fuel consumed)

- The RX-8 gets worst MPG then sports cars much fast then it.

- The RX-8 gets worst MPG and is slower then any other sports cars in it's class.

So if you disagree with any of these facts I would love to see you logic. If you agree with these facts then you are in agreement that the car is a gas hog plain and simple.

Enjoy your car, it is a great car but don't try to build into something that it is not.

there are a lot of cars out there with worse torque than the 8...so saying it has very poor torque isn't a fact. Saying it has very poor torque compared to cars in its class is more appropriate. :-P

Raptor, you're like a broken record. You say the same things in every thread like we don't know. We know the 8 is slow, we know it has pretty bad MPG. But what everybody is saying, that the one negative in a car shouldn't make it a bad car. People bought the car for the feeling the car gives them, not for excellent MPG. If we were looking for good MPG, I'm sure it would have been a different car that was chosen. Now, I feel sorry for the people who actually bought this car expecting decent MPG.....

*edit* and yeah, there are a couple people who are actually defending it for some reason. I can't vouch for them.

Car and Driver's long term tests of the G35c vs. RX-8 found city and highway within 1 mpg of each other. Also acceleration times were near identical. IMO, this is and always has been the best comparison to the RX-8 due to the 4 seat/coupe RWD platform.

I don't see anything fanboy about that. It's statistics directly related from a major publication.

At the same time, I also don't believe that the RX-8 gets good gas mileage. But people should stop complaining about it, they bought the car - get over it. Further, I think everyone should quit viewing the Rotary as a 1.3 L in comparison to a piston engine and all the sudden expect great mileage. There is nothing about this engine, imo, that makes it a 1.3 L. Its air ingestion proves otherwise.

Actually the 8 is very comparable to other rwd sportscars in it's hp range. Relatively speaking it's fast for it's hp and displacement and wieght. Regardless of mpg it's msrp makes it cheaper to own than a comparable sportscar like the s2000, z4 or z350, g35. The 8's available tq is all that is needed with High rpm HP. It creates a slingshot effect when driven properly, when coupled with it's superior handling that effect is an advantage on the closed race track or curvy roads. There really is not too much to dislike about this car uless you want to spend thousands more for something less practicle and more expensive to own with alittle better gas mileage. It's also the only rotary car in the world. Fun like no other.

How's that for subjective fact and logic? I think more real than Nissan's logic.

...and people still don't get it my friend.

People are still trying to say this car's gas mileage is OK. Members here bought this car for it's good qualities and if people use treads like this to help evaluate their purchase they could be mislead by a few fan-boys who are can't face the facts. Unfortunately the best way to avoid this situation appears to be repetition. So every time you see nonsense about MPG you will likely see the same replies to it.

Eh, I'd say just let them think it, then. If you haven't broken any sense into them yet, I don't think you ever will...

Sorry I don't buy it...I love my RX8 but 16 MPG mixed driving is just unacceptable for anything other than a SUV or high performance vehicle; which the RX8 is not.

Have you seen the real world MPG figures for the S2000 compared to the RX-8? Did you know that Consumer Report(Which is as close to real world numbers as I have seen) showed the RX-8 2 to 3 MPG less the the 350Z. A guy here at the office has a Z4 and averages 4 MPG better then my RX-8. By the way all of these cars have quicker 0to60 times then the RX. You also realise that on a Race track the Z and S2000 regularly beat the RX-8 in stock set up. The RX has the advantage over the Z only when Auto crossing. Me thinks you need to check your....facts.

Now if I may quote you "Regardless of mpg"......you do realise MPG is what this thread is about and what I am pointing out????

At least your right with the quote about it being the only rotary car on the road, ever wounder why that is.......

The RX-8 is a great car and the reason I bought it, like you I realise and enjoy its benefits, unlike you I realise it's weaknesses and limitations and don't white wash them over.

Probably true but, I have to admit I do have fun baiting the FANBOYS. So little knowledge so much hot air, I just can't resist.

You've missed the point of this thread; the RX-8 is a high-performance vehicle: one of the best-handling sports cars you can buy, at any price. That's what you're getting for your 16mpg.

When did quarter mile acceleration magically become the measure of performance? The performance of many of the world's most beloved sports cars is defined by their handling; not power: Triumph TR-3, Lotus Elan, Mazda Miata, Mini Cooper, Austin-Healey Sprite, etc...

+1 Is the 8 not in the same class as the 350Z....wouldn't you consider the Z to be a high performance vehicle

No, mpg is not what this thread is about; mpg threads have been done to death here.

What this thread is about is the fact that, contrary to what many believe, you DO get something in exchange for mediocre mileage: you're getting one of the best handling sports cars on the planet - a direct result of the Renesis' tiny size and placement in the car.

(I oughta know; it's my thread.)

Amazing. You're using every 2 seater out there and ignoring the 4 seater coupe that was directly compared to the RX-8 in numerous magazines, and that I listed above.

That could be kind of like "Selective reading, when all the facts don't support your argument."

Sure ANTIFANBOI. But I like my reasons better than yours. Msrp, insurance and value offset mpg. and the quicker 0-60. So I spend an extra $300 on gas every 50k miles. Big deal. The 8 does hang close with the fat nissan on the track while giving up 60 hp. Says alot for the rx8 balance and control. Looks like you bought a car within reason (rx8). The competitors have more hp/wt. but short wheelbase no back seat or doors or trunk space. The point here is there are trade offs. Mpg should not be a big issue if the 8 is what you want. I focus on what i want in a car. I got it in the 8. Screw gas mileage. Mine averages 18city/23 hwy. I don't know why others only get 16. Must have bad plugs or something. THIS THREAD IS DUMB
