can someone edit the title of this thread to correct the spelling? its really bothers me for some reason haha sorry.
oh yah btw im 18 and have an 8 i got it when i was 17. you can be young and have a 8 but just gotta be smart about it and mature. and when you're 15... or 16.... your opinions on cars change as much as your hormones do

why are you all saying that i'll crash it? you don't even f*cking know me(don't be like "oh you said "f*cking"...that's so immature, he shouldn't drive" because it just makes you sound like a retard) there have been many valid points on this thread supporting the fact that if i want the car, i should get it...and i've talked to some people(that replied on this thread, AND disagreed with me) and he said that you're all jealous that you couldn't get a car like that when you were my age, and honestly, i'd be jealous too...so just give up...you're only making me want the car even more
and how do you know wether i'm a putz or not? and you call me immature

Man, if you get this jacked over an internet site I can just image what your reaction would be like when someone challenges you behind the wheel.
Mature?.......far from it! Get you car,..ignore what people have been saying....and prove us right.

Man this thread is still going?
Bottom line. GET MORE EXPERIENCE IN DRIVING. I'm not insulting you but like a I said before ... Jesus/Ghandi/Buddha could be driving the 8 and still cause harm cuz they're inexperienced drivers.
Don't get the 8 just cuz it'll "one-up" the other students.
I don't believe that the members are "jealous" of you cuz you will be getting an 8 at an early age. More that you are flaunting it and making that the basis of your arguements.
Regardless, this is pointless discussion. Can a mod please close this thread. the kid's just going to get angrier and angrier. And we all know that is the path to the dark side.

On the other hand the quote above worries me. I hope we don't meet while I'm pedalling my bike down a back road while you're "testing [the car's] limits". Don't drive further than you can see, and drive as if there is ALWAYS someone around the bend.

...I just don't get where some of you are coming from. Is it because this car costs more than you think a 17 year old should have? (I know he's 15 NOW, but not when he's going to get it, according to him.)
There are plenty of threads about the lack of torque, so we know he won't be winning a lot of stoplight drag races.
I can personally attest to the fact that this car has saved my butt from a few accidents due to other people doing stupid things.
I'm willing to bet than any person on this forum could go out and get any car and drive it faster and crazier than it is meant to be driven. I can go get in my Chevy Blazer right now and go 100mph, and I'm absolutely positive that it would be more dangerous than doing 100 in the -8.
This car has an excellent roll-over rating, an excellent crash rating, superb handling... Why WOULDN'T you want your kid to have those safety features?
Go put your own children in an aging bucket of bolts and rust and see how safe you feel when they go out on the road. It's entirely possible that they can get in an accident that is not their fault, and they might not survive because they're in a substandard vehicle.
I still can't help but feel that people are pissed any time someone younger than they are gets this car. This isn't the first time someone has mentioned their age and everyone gets up in arms.

Pretty much agree with this guy. What's to stop any kid from acting stupid in a Geo Metro? Just getting in an RX-8 doesn't automatically make you an idiot driver. If you're planning to be stupid, you're going to be stupid, regardless of whether it be in an RX-8 or a Geo Metro or even a bicycle.
I can't help but wonder when I see posts calling our RX-8 "powerful" or "fast", as though the RX-8 were extra dangerous somehow. Powerful and fast in what extra special way, pray tell? Most modern family sedans pack the same 200 or so HP the RX-8 has if not way more, and you could probably count on your ten fingers or less the number of cars today that can't do over 100 mph.
Learning how to drive has very little to do with the car, if you ask me. It has more to do with whether or not you're a responsible and mature enough driver to resist idiotic temptations. You don't have to be a kid to drive recklessly. I mean gee, I'm sure everybody on this board drives their RX-8 at the speed limit and shifts at 3000 RPMs, takes turns nice and slow, and actually brakes before curves like you're supposed to.
Monetary and financial responsibility...well that's a whole different story.

In any event, if you're looking for validation of your point of view you could pass this entire thread on to your parents. I have some hope that if they understand your perspective they may think twice before putting you behind the wheel of anything with an engine. But hope springs eternal.

So, you're saying that people should not be allowed to drive until, in your opinion, they're sufficiently mature enough that they will drive safe? What age is that, exactly?
We could move the driving age to 25, and people here would bitch that the 25 year old shouldn't drive yet because they don't have enough experience. Well, no kidding, they haven't driven yet!
It astounds me to see people call this guy immature, then go to another thread and talk about how fast they've gotten their -8 up to, or have a picture of a persons legs coming out of a toilet with "Mental Health is Overrated" as their avatar...or pictures of cartoon characters....
Come on, people. save the high and mighty routine for someone else and let's talk about how good (or bad, if that's your opinion) the RX-8 is.

All the stability control/safety features in the world are going to pull someone's butt out of the ditch (or, even worse, physical injury to you or someone else). The laws of physics are still at play, with or without a governor or stability control/safety features. With something like an RX8, you can get into plenty of trouble....much moreso than with a car with lower capabilites. As I said before, you're still hurtling around a 3,000 pound glass & steel projectile with very high capabilities for a driver with little in the way of driving experience.
Most of the cars made in the last several years have airbags, ABS, etc. Saabs are supposedly good ones (not my cup of tea, but I have no idea whether they are good or bad cars). They're "supposed" to be safe. FWD right? That will make them rather benign, which is good for a new driver.
Not being critical at all. Just knowing what the RX8 is capable of, I wouldn't put it in the hands of a driver that only has a few years (or less) of driving experience, regardless of their age or their financial means (or their parents financial means). As a parent, it would be irresponsible of me, and would consider it a danger to others on the road having someone with little experience behind the wheel (and no, a year's worth of experience does not qualify as extensive experience).
I don't care how good or bad the driver's training is. It still can't prepare them for the multitude of driving scenarios they'll encounter without a few years of experience in real world situations.
Monkey....that Hyundai is a good first car to gain experience. Drive it until the wheels fall off, which should take a while given they have something like 10 year warranties. They have all the modern safety features. It will be economical to drive, the more recent models are very well made. It should carry you through at least your high school years, and with any luck at all, a good portion of college.
My son bought a 2 year old Elantra. They are great first cars. Stick with it as long as it keeps running. You're pocketbook will be all the better for it. You'll be driving a safe car and you'll have some coin in your pocket to afford something nicer when you land that first post graduate job.....and, much more driving experience to boot.

I just read the first couple pages of this so if I repeat anything just ignore my post. In HS me and my g/f didnt have a good place to go for sex (2 stay at home moms). The 8 is difficult to have sex in. So if you need a car as a "bedroom" like I did dont get the 8. On the other hand the 8 may help you get a woman if you dont have one now.

My parents trusted my judgement, and I didn't abuse their trust. Perhaps InvisibleMonkey is in that category. It doesn't mean he wouldn't want to put his foot into it, but maybe, just maybe he knows when it's appropriate to do so. Which brings me to the real heart of this post. Make a deal with your folks. If they're going to dump $35K into a car for you, maybe they should put up another grand or so and send you to an advanced driving school. You're young and you haven't had time to develop really bad habits yet. You'll learn to handle a car in situations that you can't replicate on the street and it will give you both confidence and a skill set to help you cope with the temptations that come with a performance car. Had such things existed back when I was first driving, I would've gone. Not only will it make you a better driver, but it might set an example for your friends. To paraphrase -- "friends don't let friends drive crazy". Something to think about.
