Just out of curiosity, is your car manual or automatic? Did you buy this car used or new? Did you do any research into the car prior to buying it?

One of the primary differences (if not the biggest difference) is that your engine has 4 ports instead of 6, so your engine can't breath at really high RPM and has a lower redline. I dunno if it's cost effective or even possible to upgrade your engine to 6 ports. Also, you probably have a 5-speed manual or 4-speed auto... I believe that all high power engines come with a 6-speed manual. Here in the USA, all RX8s now have 6 ports and 6 speeds, regardless of transmission type (though the auto is still rated at slightly less power).

A 5 speed manual? Never heard of one.

edit: I'm a stupid American, I guess there is a 5 speed manual being sold in other countries.

Europe gets a high powered car and a low powered car, both are available as manuals...

You probably don't want to hear this but the only effective way to do it is to trade in for the higher powered car with a six speed manual.

Sorry, it seems you bought the wrong one if you want the 230hp model.

Probably right but then you're still stuck with the 5M. Personally, I think it would be easier all round to just trade up. Obviously, it'll cost but so will an upgrade.

It is not the same engine. The major difference is the usw of additional auxiliary inlet ports. It would be costly to upgrade.

Yes you can.

I recommend you spend a bit more time looking through the forum. There's plenty of good info in here.

Have you considered moving?

From my limited knowledge (mostly from the RX-8 anthology by Yamaguchi and Dinkel) the engines are very different. As stated previously, 3 intake and exhaust ports vs. two, totally different intake system, horespower difference (as you know) and red line difference. One of the reasons the automatic (USA - prior to 2007)) and 5spd (Europe) gets the lower horsepower engine is the transmission can't take the 9000RPM red line of the high power (MT) engine. Thus, unless I'm missing something, the only way to "upgrade" the engine to the MT version is to do a total engine swap for the high power version. But then your 5sp MT won't be able to handle the high RPM.

"Love the one you're with" or go find a good price on a 6sp MT.

Zoom, Zoom!

To the original poster: you asked the question in the wrong forum
US guys don't know jack about the 4port 5MT version that Japan and Europe have, since all they have is the 6port 6MT and the 4port 4AT versions.

Differences between the two versions of Renesis:

- 6 ports instead of 4 ports (main difference, hence the respective "names")
- 2 additional injectors for the 6port (more air, hence more fuel needed)
- S-DAIS different in 6port. Can't explain it fully in words (you should look for the picture explaining it), but it works in a way that above 5750rpm a special valve connects the two chambers so that the pulse of one rotor causes the intake charge to be "pushed" into the other, thus producing a small (5%) boosting effect.
- VFAD in 6port, which allows the S-DAIS to work as it should over 6000rpm
- Obviously different fuel maps (not only because the extended redline to 9000rpm, but also because of additional injectors and added fuel needs)

What the above come down to is this: 231HP/8500 and 21.5Kgm/6500 for the 6port, 192HP/7300 and 22.5Kgm/5500 for the 4port.

I think I covered most of them.....
