I was looking at new cars and regardless of what else I test drove (including an M3, Genesis Coupe, and 370z), I always kept coming back to the 8.
Friends kept telling me I *HAD* to get something that had more horsepower and torque. My response was the same... basically that I could care less about beating someone off the line at a red light. I don't need to beat someone in a race in order to prove my manlyhood.
The 8 was just plain fun to drive. It's not the fastest car off the line. Plain and simple.
If torque, acceleration off the line, and horsepower are what you crave, turbocharge your 8 or look for a different car.
In my honest opinion, if you don't mind giving up some of the tight handling that the 8 provides, the Genesis Coupe is a fine machine. The 306hp V6 is quite impressive. It was my second choice to the 8 and they are practically giving them away just trying to get them on the streets to generate buzz.

RX8 and a Truk....
Maybe learn how to drive? that'd help a LOT. If you drive a car w/o much torque, you'll need RPMs. You should have launched about 5500 if you REALLY wanted to beat him - not half-assed it until it was too late.

You're the first person I've seen talk about testing the Genesis Coupe.
I was close to buying one but I really am glad I got the RX-8.
But people look at me like I'm stupid when I tell them that those Genesis Coupes are the real deal.
However I have yet to see one on the streets.

Sure, I easily rode his butt in a 270 turn, watching him trying frantically to keep pace and not slide out. But I wanted to go in first, and zoom away, out of sight. I don't think this is too much to ask from a sports car.
RX8 is a great car, it has fantastic style and handling, but it bums me out every once in a while, just when I need that extra bit of torque. Being let down by such a well engineered car is quite painful... you expect it to do better, and then you're slapped with reality.
It's not about the other guy beating me... It's about knowing that I don't even have a chance. Sure, we can say that we don't care about it... but, deep inside, most of us do.
Well, enough b!tching... I wonder if someone who has supercharged their 8 can chime in and share the experience.

the rx8 is a nice car but it is lacking a lot in the engine department
I went the turbo way and have been very happy ever since, although I am going to change cars soon because I need something more practical and I will be selling my turbo kit. But yeah the turbo kit will fix your problems and no camry will beat you, I promise.

Meh. My gf's corolla can beat my 8 off the line no problem. I swear, I can't NOT spin the tires from a stop in that thing. Has WAY too much torque down low, and nada up top. PITA to drive, actually. Then I try to drive it around a corner, and I remember why I bought the 8. The thing steers like a sherman tank.
Trying to beat other cars off the line does nothing but make you look like an idiot. Seriously. It impresses no one, and makes yourself a bigger target for the local PD.

Eh, I take a pair ramp every day now...and most of the time I have to sit behind someone doing 30-35 mph up the ramp...unless I make a quick right turn into the parking before the ramps, and then sit there at the entrance until the ramp is clear. I could care less if someone else is faster off the line...just give me a clear 3 corner ramp
