Do you ever recommend the rx8 to ppl?

Usually I just ask what they are looking for in a car and usually I get one of a couple of answers. Either they say "I want good gas mileage" or "I want to beat my friend's mustang GT." Then I have to break it to them that this car doesn't do either of those and they are no longer interested.

I recommend other cars, I tell them im very mechanically inclined and i don't mind maintaining a car well. so its the best car I will ever own its unique and fits my personality. Most people are like car maintenance? whassat and it would just be a shame to let someone else drive a car like this without driving how its supposed to be, which is like you stole it......

yeah i know ppl....(cough my sister) that let her last oil change go about 10,000 miles...the only reason it got changed is because i did it for her so she had a motor left....ppl just want to drive the car and do nothing else...

The "maintenance" is laughably easy for something unique like this. Almost "mainstream stupid" easy.
The clutch lasts more than 10,000 miles, battery holder stays in place, headlights don't fall out, something that cannot be said of other vehicles of unique caliber.
16 year old kids can afford to drive this car, the upkeep is so low and the mechanical reliability so high.

you know what, now that you all mentioned it, i realized i've actually never outright recommended the 8 to anyone, i always just say, 'it's a really fun car, you should give it a try', and leave it at that.

The last car purchased in my family was an uncle who bought a 2009 BMW 328i. He was looking at the 4 cylinder TSX (blech) so I said look at the 328i, G35/G37 sedan and IS.
I think my mom is next. Her 2003 VW Passat is reaching the 6 year everything fall apart VW timeline. She does a lot of city driving so I'm thinking Honda Insight or Toyota Prius. Okay I know not exciting....

Something else to consider is the price point. When my friend got his Base, Bone stock, No Wing, 6SPD RX8 in 2004, it was $36,000.
I got my 2004 with 34,000 miles with good service records, DSC, Six Disc and Wing for $12,900. Hell of a value when you consider it like that.
If you buy one new, (though the 09's are spiffy with the new styling and rear-end ratio change) it's almost foolish. Hell, Carmax had a VR R3 with only 4,600 miles for a scant $23,000. (I admit, I considered it LONG and hard)
Nice thing about buying a good used one is that all of the recalls are done for me.

Yep. I bought mine for $12k last month. 05 Shinka MT, 55k miles, LOADED with MazdaSpeed extras and a sub. I call it my "recession special". With the mods, the car was almost $40k new.

I'm honest about the 8, I make sure to point out the horrible gas mileage and moderate power to anyone interested. I then get the "so why do you drive one?" questions.
It's hard to explain how much fun an 8 is to someone who's never driven one. Oh well, I'm kinda glad I don't drive a car that I see like 20 times on my way to work, like the Mustang.

a friend just got an 04 titanium gray metallic the other day he loves it so far
but he says he shouldnt have to add oil in between 3000 mile oil changes
i said haha thats why your oil lights on
he said its cuz the oil needs to be changed
i told him that may be the case but the lights on cuz its low

^ A co-worker found me adding oil in the parking lot after work one day. He thought there was something wrong with my car. After explaining what I was doing, he asked, "so why didn't Mazda just put in an oil reservoir to top it off for you between oil changes?"
I was dumbstruck for a few seconds.
If his oil light is on then he has gone way too far before adding oil.

funny thing ... my friend was lookin for a car when he wrecked his 3 series and i was shopping with him (his ride places) and we saw an 8 and he drove it with me in the passenger seat and i said no! he didnt really get the manual either so we moved on n he ended up with an a4 that day. next day i totaled my 350z n a week later i was driving my 8! funny how the experience gets to you. ever since i havent really recommended it juss coz i dont want ppl sayin i tld em to get a slow car coz they dont understand the beauty of the rotary or the 8

The drive home was more than a little deflating... but she's all back together again and looking good.
