I dont care, in fact the other day, i let a corolla pass me when they were WOT....i went from 6th to 3rd at 45 mph and still couldn't pass them lol. I guess i needed to grab 2nd gear. I think if i actually cared about straightline, i probably would of ended up with a 350Z. I think i pretty much knew what i was getting myself into with the 8. Its not fast per say but quick enough.........quick enough to get pulled over too. So although its not blistering fast, its still plenty quick given the fact that not many people push their cars to the extreme, 8K, 9K. So when we're on the 8, the RX8 is plenty quick versus people who floor their car to 4K and stop.

I think most would just be happy with the advertised 232 hp, which would translate into about 210 at the rear tires.

Regardless, I love the car and plan on FI next year.

Question:

Are we talking quick or fast here? In other words, do you want pure top-end speed or is it 0-100 or 1/4 mile times that you care about?

My guess is you're talking quick, not fast.

If that's the case, same HP, more torque, would accomplish the same goal. If the RX-8 had a "square" torque/HP rating (i.e. equal numbers), I don't think any of us would be bitching about it how quick it is off the line.

HP gives you that last lunge in the quarter mile. Torque is that wonderful fling off the line that we all love.

Me, I'd love it if this car had about 75 more ft-lbs of torque. HP could stay the same.

How do you figure that? There's more than 10% drivetrain loss.

I think thats what were talking about. The car is fast once it get going. Its getting going, thats the problem.

There should be an option for "this whole discussion is teh gheyest"

Tiresome, old, overblown nonsense. Yes, more power would be nice. Yes, the WRX & Evo are faster, and not very pleasing to look at on a daily basis.

Fast? Somebody provide me with the concrete, indisputable definition of fast that the Evo, WRX, and others fit into while the 8 does not. Show me it, and we'll talk. Otherwise it becomes a question of subjective definitions where we compare 2 or 3 cars and can definitively say one is fastER, or fastEST. But that doesn't necessarily land the others in a category of slow.

Please search this forum or the Internet to understand the relationship between torque and horsepower. What you're saying is wrong. I don't understand why people think torque is for when you're going slow and horsepower is for when you're going fast. They are proportionally related to one another. This is what happens when all you care about is peak horsepower and torque numbers.

I like this simple explanation.

And yes I care about acceleration to a degree.

Maybe you guys are just driving it wrong.

I've got a pure stock drivetrain and I'm just a hair slower than S2000's, which , from what I can tell, are considered to be "fast". I think just because our cars are so slow off the line everyone started bitching that they were slow. Then people noticed other cars in the same price range were faster, which made it even slower in everyone's eyes.

We're fast, guys. Get that through your head.
Yes, the 350, evo, sti, and S2000 are all faster. Well guess what? They should be! 2 of them are turbo, one of them is a V6. Take the turbos off the Evo and STI and watch them crawl. Take 2 cylinders off the 350 and watch it eat our dust. Add 2 more seats to the S2000 mock it when it struggles.

Stop comparing apples to oranges. We're fast. We just happen to have faster friends on our block. Get over it.

For street {NORMAL} driving on the highway, city streets etc.... Its more than fast enough for anything you encounter. Now, if you're into track, street, trying to outrun the police etc.......... then its not fast enough ...... needs about 100 more HP. And possible a turbo setup.

Just a guess. Maybe it's closer to 15 or 20 percent in real life. Obviously the advertised 232 hp is way optimistic.

It isn't unless you've redefined the word 'obvious'.

Car manufacturers never rate it at the wheels, so the only thing obvious is that you shouldn't expect the numbers they claim.

I'd like a car that does 0-60 in 2 seconds, gets 2,000 mpg, pulls 2G on the skidpad, zero polar moment of inertia, never needs maintenance, lasts forever, and costs about 25 cents. A dime would be even better.

And a free pony.

I hope you're not calling the STi a sportscar, because all it is is an econobox on steroids. Anything with 300tq/300hp can be fast; well, anything not weighing 4500 pounds or more, that is.
