Aside from that... I like the looks of that magnum. I would have put that on my list when I shopped for and ultimately bought thsi rx-8.

No.

Put your sports car around a track with that magnum and watch as you lap him.

Sports car does not mean fastest thing on the planet. My mom's ford taurus was faster then my 1st gen rx7.

[edit] Doh...for some reason, I thought magnum PICK UP....lol.. I have trucks on the mind I suppose. I realize he means the wagon/car thing.

Odd - I was behind a magnum last week...he got on it HARD - to the point of a pretty cool burn out. I was RIGHT on his tail, and could have pulled around him and likely caught up and passed him. I was pretty impressed my 8 did as well as it did.

From a roll, as long as the 8 started in the right gear/rpm, I'd bet on the MT rx8 every time.

I agree with 1.3L hemi only won by a car length. IMO I think the Magnum is Ugly, it is a damn station wagon no matter how you slice it. I will admit I have ran with some cars just to see how we do, I think it is a victory that you were on car behind....

My thinking is here in Tampa my wife and I go to this one steak house and there are always Masseratis, Porsches ETC parked in the first Row. Well Guess were they always park the 8!!! with good company!

I do not think the station wagon would go there...

my point is done

E55? S4 Avant? Lots of 'wagons' can kick the proverbial *** of a lot of 'sports' cars.

Part of the problem is the loose definition of 'sports car' nowadays. Back in my day a sports car was a minimalist's dream. Light weight, high-strung engine, perhaps an oil leak or two, convertible or otherwise open air...Great handling...it was a FUN car if not a fast car.

dude sports cars get beat by lots of other cars- it aint all about that. subaru forrester anyone? i could name a half dozen cars that beat sports cars. so what? your idea of sports car is in need of adjustment.

here's another for you - GMC Syclone. Faster than anything else made those 2 years in 0-60. Even Corvettes etc. imagine getting your doors blown off by a pick up. an S-15. who cares? does it make your car any less fun to drive?

That's just it!

I've been working on a theory. My theory is the better the driver, the less HP his car needs to be 'fun to drive'.

Staight....

Bottom line is, if all you care about is that "one car length" at a light, you would all be driving SRt Neons.

You too Ike.

So, your problem is the shape of the car that beat you. Stuffing big, powerful V-8's into land yachts is nothing new. American manufacturers have been doing just that since the 1960's. And what's the point of being able to (just barely, or not) win a drag race. Big deal. The world is not connected together by drag strips. And no, I won't forgot the numbers. I fail to understand why some 8 owners keep trying to compare their sports car to muscle cars.

There's NO way you could disagree.

A great driver can have a BLAST in a 90whp Miata.

A poor driver whines about 'this car is no fun - it's not fast!'

A great driver can have a REALLY good time driving a 186whp RX8

A mediocre driver whines about Mazda lying about the HP numbers.

:D
