Does the RX-8 ever win a race?
#26
I'm not surprised really that other car sites would boast about their respective "kills" against the 8. I believe the reason is because the 8 is such an entirely different and totally misunderstood automobile. Most performance drivers know it's a rotary and hence their elation at beating an 8 is directly proportional to the fact that they need to justify the reason why they haven't considered buying one. That is, the 6MT Renesis is about the most efficient powerplant in the history of commercial automobiles....it can achieve 238hp with two tiny 650cc rotars. How many piston engines are capable of that feat! Plus, the 8 just simply looks fast, it's functional and an extremely sexy ride which turns heads. It commands attention from the driving community and is always noticed on the road. It's only major downside is the poor gas mileage, but the weight distribution, comfort, high rev acceleration and fun factor more than offset.
I guess, in other words, the 8 is easy to criticize, it's easy to judge, it may even be easy to overtake in certain conditions/situations, but in reality it's an absolute marvel of Japanese engineering. Unless you own one, you'd never understand that

I gave up the whole street racing is cool thing when i was like 15 years old...I think im just more mature cause whenever my friends see some ugly box that goes fast I always hear the same thing "I guarentee that thing will smoke you" I always reply saying I didnt get this car to go around racing people, guess they dont realize that I would have gotten a STi if I wanted to street race cars but I just wanted a overall great car.

I had a great time during the race and the car setup was really good. I was able to get by most of the cars in the field fairly easily. The Mazda RX-8's were another story however. The Z3 Coupe I was driving was one of the oldest cars in the field and was not equipped with ABS brakes at this race. This made passing the RX-8's with their vastly superior brakes very difficult, especially at Laguna Seca . I had some great multi lap battles with several of the SpeedSource cars during the race and managed to eventually get by most of them before turning the car over in 6th place to my co-driver.
:D
An 8 won the race, 2 more were top 10, last car was 13. The winner and Top 10 cars were from SpeedSource.
Why do I get the feeling the original poster trolled us? Oh well. :D

You do know the WRC WRX cars have very little in common with a street WRX, right? The STi gets closer, but still is far, far from the FIA car.
The GrandAm cars, otoh, are frighteningly close to being bone-***-stock. The SpeedSource 8s even use the *STOCK* mazda airbox, the very same one all our (un-modified) 8s have -- the only difference is, SpeedSource lines 'em with gold foil to aid heat rejection. Then they gut the car, put a cage in it, different wheels and tires.. but same stock brakes, with race pads. You can't even change the calipers.
The engines are bone-***-stock, save for the ECU programming.
The WRC, on the other hand, are purpose-built, very very little remains from the car whence it came.
In other words.. just because the WRC WRX is a star doesn't mean the street WRX will do ANYTHING like the WRC car.
The Rx-8, however, puts its money where its mouth is, and races. For real. Not as a completely remanufactured car which just LOOKS like the street car, but in a form which is very, very close to street trim. Which is the whole purpose of GrandAm. It's stock car racing done right.

I've seen everything from Civics to minivans weave in and out of traffic to get ahead of me. They are a menace on the road. But I guess, they go home, log onto their minivan forum and brag about how they "owned" an 8.

Couple of days ago a VW came off a stop light but I ignored him. He blasted off on the straight and I ignored him. S-turn... lots a brake light, he tries to set up for the apex and just for fun I trove up his tail pipe. (which my wife pointed out was kinda childish) Was that a kill?

It's cool that somone is campaigning RX-8s in a race series but don't act like the WRX or STi is some freaking off road vehicle when it competes in many many more motorsports events than RX-8s do and on everything from the dragstrip to a snowy mountain pass.

last night i thot there was someone trying to race me in the lane to my right. i picked up speed to go like 5 mph faster (since i was in the fast lane i thot the other guy was annoyed i was going to slow). but after going about 82 in a 65 i was like "nah, i'm not racing and i don't want a ticket." the other guy kept on going at like 90 or so and passed me. i turned to see who was in hurry and...
it was a cop. yikes. no ticket though and the guy in front of me was going faster.
anyways, the rx-8 can and does win races; but not straightline races vs other "racing" cars. the rx-8's focus is more on handling. the power is decent, the handling is great.
as for the kills section thing....
I am SO glad it's not here. At least for street kills. The closest thing I think we should have to that would be "track results". I've seen kills sections on other websites. They just **** me off, even when they're talking about other people's cars. They **** me off but the pure stupidity of the posts. Some "kills" get posted here on this forum but generally the mods find them and delete them. Those kills are usually just as dumb as the ones on other sites.
A kill on those sites are usually like this
"You almost lost to a STi with your 350Z? What? Were you seeing if you could win by keeping your RPMS under 2K? They're so slow. I beat one last week. He was going WOT and trying really hard, I could tell. I was just kinda cruising and I embarrassed the hell outta him. Lol. I could've gone a lot faster too."
Not only that they whole idea of kills is dumb. I posted about it before and don't feel like posting about it again.

Did you WIN a USTCC championship? It's quite possible the 8 will win a GrandAm championship.. *yawn* yet another one for the wankel. IMSA GT was pwned by rotaries. FIA *banned* rotaries for the longest time, because herr Wankel's little bizarro motor was pwning Porsches left and right. Can't have that now, can we?
I didn't miss jack, Jack. I purposely dismissed and diminished what appears to be a very middle-of-the-pack performance from Subaru in USTCC. Sure, they won a few races here and there, but even Jordan F1 wins once every blue moon or so.
I'm still looking for more stats. Now that you've made it painfully obvious the WRX has *some* road-racing kudos, I want to scrutinize how it stacks up against the 8, the 7, the 7, and the other 7, the 4, the 3, the 2, the R-100, the Cosmo L100S, and the Miata. Looks like Mazda still has more wins to it than Scooby does.

Before that, it's slaughtered a couple of BMW 3-series in the same Grand Am race series.
Last year it did fairly well too, but this year is even better.
Grand Am is on Speed, at odd times and odd days.. as they say, 'check your local listings.'
Looks like the 8 is shaping up to be a sweet racecar, just like all its predecessors.
Mebby I should drop by SpeedSource.. they're local to me.. they prep the GrandAm cars. :D

I'm still trying to comprehend what you meant.. clarify? Gracias.

Also have you ever even seen a WRC even, do you have any clue what Tarmac means? And FYI Prodrive starts with an STi just like Petit starts with an RX-8, I can't help that you're getting butthurt because they do more to the car to turn it into a racecar. Get back to me when Mazda wins something significant in a car that isn't a GTP car.

um i dont think his question was about the wrx or any subaru car inwhat ever race series they may be in. his question was about rx-8 winning races. lets stick to the subject please?
for a look at what races rx-8s have won you can check rxtuner.com and rotarynews.com. you should find plenty of articles there

A kills section in a forum only encourages young, impressionable youths to engage in those activities which, under certain circumstances, allow them the opportunity to sate their superegos with substance to support claims they deem necessary to win the admiration of their peers on forums featuring cars in accelerated competition, unlike this one.
It must be understood, however, the promoting such activity, by design or neglect, only increase the participants potential for bodily harm, property damage, legal entanglements and/or death. It is well-known the majority of street racing takes place on populated roadways and places where non-participants are at risk of being involved in mishaps resulting from such activities.
One day, those forums featuring such activities and hosting those discussions pertianing to their execution, will be slapped with a lawsuit, which would in fact, lay just blame, either fully or partial, upon the shoulders of those administrators responsible for site content and permissive postures.
Be warned; that lawsuits are pending and the wave of responsible appointment approaches.
With that said, I agree with general consensus, and that is most of the kills logged against the RX-8 is about those who either didn't know they were racing or those who knew of the inferrence, but didn't care enough to engage. I have little ricers with the barrel exhausts ring-a-ding-ding past me all the time and don't really care. I hope the RX-8's would loose every street race it every participated in. Then maybe we would be left alone to just enjoy the ride, comfort and superior handling characteristics, which compelled us to buy the car in the first place.
My name is Razpewton and I approve of this messsage.

racing is so immature.. i occaisionally will stuff someone in the slow lane or keep them in a merge lane if they think they are entitled to cut me off. If the signal and "ask" I'll let em over, but I've run many a car and truck off the road or into a median to remind them that they are the ones who are supposed to yeild the right of way.

I'll add to this a bit being next to Zoom one of the older registered members of the site that has so far participated in this particular thread. Long before the RX-8 was even released, this forum decided there would be no "kills" section. I recall it being debated early on about what direction the forum would take, and the majority chimed in saying we wanted nothing to do with it. Those that did want a kills section, I don't think really stuck around after that.
Just proactively clearing the air, as I'm sure someone, somewhere, was going to read this thread and infer we don't have a "kills" section because the RX-8 is such a dog .
