Question Door edge guard

Does anybody have this accessory? I was wondering if it is worth buying. I suppose it ruins the lines of the car somewhat, but haven't seen these guards on a high-resolution photo, only on the one at Trussville Mazda's part store.

If it doesn't look too bad, maybe it's worth buying them to protect the door - even though I'm extra careful not to bump them into another car...

If someone has these guards and could make a good photo of the car with them, I'd appreciate it - thanks. Especially if the car is titanium grey :D

I wished I had them on my car last week. I parked a little to close to the concrete garage wall. I opened the door and BAM, took off a layer of paint.

If you don't mind going to another car's board you can check out what I did on my Altima... bought the stuff off Ebay and got it installed myself. The way RX-8 doors are cut, it will be easier than on the Altima too...

We are talking Mazda stock part door edges here, not some generic brand. This door edge is made of metal, painted the same EXACT color of the car and goes on by simply pushing it snug against the edge. I have a brick exterior home that I have to park next to and my last vehicle got it's doors scratched up because of my kids and wife weren't as careful as they should have been. So far, not even these have a scratch. Then again they know how I am about this car and that might prevent them from being so careless.

I was worried about it coming off but once they are snug to the edge of the door, they haven't moved since. The easiest way to get these on is with a foot long 2X4 and either another foot long 2X4 or a hammer. Place he board up against the edge of the door edge and hammer on it from top to bottom until it is snug against the edge.

You can buy them for a few bucks at any car parts store like autozone. They are transparent and not too noticeable on the car.
I got one on the drivers side to prevent damage from the garage wall.

Hm... it's made of metal?
This hammering business makes me a bit wary...
will it not damage the paint underneath when you are hammering it on?

Haven't seen any damage, they are just tight. As far as hammering on, that is what the 2x4 is for, to spread the pressure from the hammering to the length of the board. It just needed a couple of taps. The 2x4 does no damage to the edge guard.

That's not exactly what I meant
Since the edge guards are metal, does hammering them onto the door not going to damage the paint of the door itself?
I'm just asking because in case I need to get them off for whatever reason (they need replacement due to damage, or just want them off 'cause I don't like the look etc.), will the door be scratched up by putting on something metallic?
What's the inside of the door guards like? Pure metal or is there some sort of a protective plastic coating that'd save the door paint when putting these on?

Try the 5"push on plastic guard at Autozone or any parts store. Its cheap and can be removed at will when washing the car etc. just put them where the door edge will strike something. Works for me.

I read with great interest all of the comments about "hammering" them on. I have had a set of these for a couple of months now, and have not yet installed them due to the instructions.

They say to strip the edge of the doors of the weatherstripping(with a provided tool) and use touch-up paint on the (now exposed) metal. After the paint has dried, tap them on (they are also specific to a side of the car) with a rubber hammer.

I haven't been able to bring myself to do it (my car is Yellow).

The tool is a joke. There is no weather stripping to strip. I have not seen any damage to the paint. They are just tight, not that they scratch the paint off.

You got instructions? I asked Trussville about this and they agreed with me that it was senseless to take any weather stripping off of it since they do not go up that far. They are side specific.

How about just using the Xpel product which costs $5 instead of $35 for the Mazda part? That ways its transparent, protects the edge and can be removed easily later on with no marks. The hammering part just makes me uncomfortable buying the Mazda door edge kit. Do the edges have rubber or some material on the insides that won't scratch the door in anyway?

I just got my set today....the instructions made me hide them in my trunk! The part about using the cutting tool and touch-up paint sent chills down my spine!

I am waiting until someone follows the instructions and has success; until then I will just leave them in the trunk.

My car came with something on the driver's door, very narrow plastic like strip... maybe xpel or maybe something from the factory for protection. I was going to take it off but it isn't noticeable at all. I would go with something like that. Unless you're planning on denting someone else's car what's the point of having them? I've never dented a car, I've tapped them before with the door a couple times on accident but it seems like it must take an incredible opening force to dent another car with your door.

I saw those and thought they looked nice but after hearing they are metal, fit very tightly and could damage underlying paint then why not just wait and if the paint gets damaged THEN I'll add them... :D

i don't want to sound like a jerk, but i think they are plastic, and they go on in like 2 minutes. They are color matched to your car, and are very unnoticeable. A monkey can put them on, just looking at the door, you can see that the tool they give you is pointless, it's simple as pie, really guys, why spend 35.00 to hide them in your trunk.

WRONG! They are metal. I have them and put them on myself, try reading the thread from the beginning next time.

As I said before, I got them to protect the door edge from my brick house and my sometimes clumsy family members when they get out of the car. So far, no damage. Also, if they do get scratched, I will just repaint them myself as I have spray paint in the color of my car.

Well, the rest of my post still stands, easy to put on, why spend 35.00 and hide them in your trunk? SIMPLE STUFF.

Silverarrow was talking about my comments of hiding mine in my trunk after reading the instructions.............and after he "Punked" me like that, I went out and put them on during lunch today!

They are metal and very form fitting/tight. During the install, I have to admit I skipped the scraping of my paint with the provided tool and just used a rubber mallet and pinged them on with great success! (Thank God) Of course time will tell, but no visible damage to anything.....

took about 5 minutes, one of which was me cursing Silverarrow :D
but it was as easy as he said but they are not the same type that he thought they were.

Were they worth $35.00....we all know the answer to that one but they do serve a purpose and do not adversly affect the lines of the car, so I am happy!

Anyone needing to see the instructions that Mazda provided can simply PM me for them but that are not needed.....

Talking

Hey, glad i got you motivated! :D
Anyway, i did go out and check mine, they are metal, i guess i just didnt' realize it before. Anyway, i believe they are well worth the 35.00, and also found the tool useless!

I have the Xpe doorl edges as part of my front/rear bumper 3M coating. They look quite good and seem to do the job.

To sum things up: Stay far away from this option. Gotcha.

Hammering on an RX8 sounds rather unpleasent.
