drastic power loss, please help!
#26
to answer the redline questions, i believe the final intake valves open up at 7200 rpm (If my remember correctly, if not feel free to correct the statement.) So redlining the car will properly open these fully for a good amount of time, thus burning the carbon out of every nuck and crany (just like english muffins.)

Update
I took the car in yesterday for that issue and two others. I had an airbag light on again, and I am pretty sure I also have a bad synchro because at high revs, the gearbox would grind from 3rd to 4th. The dealer called me back and said that they were going to have to open the box to find out what the problem was and repair that. They then said they were unable to replicate the power loss. That didn't surprise me because it happened to me on a hot day after considerable freeway time. They then suggested to me that the power loss may have been transmission related. That doesn't seem right to me. It would seem to me that if it was indeed due to a transmission problem, that I would have noticed it before and under other circumstances.
I have asked them to take the cat off and visually inspect it, so hopefully they will do that. I think their transmission explanation for power loss may be some BS though.

I'll find my car's engine replacement paperwork and get you a copy.

I showed that recall notice to my dealer and he said that the recall had already been performed and that the PCM reflash was already done. I guess if I keep having this problem I will just have to take it back.

Right - the recall may be done - but the damage to your engine has been done, too...thus, the new motor. I'll check for my new-motor-paperwork tonite. It'll show symptoms (i hope) as well as how they fixed it (by replacing the engine).

As of yesterday they hadn't done it. I went in to get a key that I had left on the ring though and it was up on the lift. It looked like they were starting to tear into the gearbox for the synchro issue. I asked them to visually inspect it so we'll see.

no power new engine
I had the same problems and took it to the dealer. They tested it and ran the numbers by Mazda. Mazda said put a new motor in it. I should have it back soon. Tumminia Mazda in Olathe. they have done me pretty good so far.
No Power after highway trip.

Do you happen to know what tests they ran? Compression?

Any idea what would be going on? Because at first the dealershit said my car was fine and I could pick it up, then they took a look at this CPU Code that they didn't know what it meant and found out what was going on with my car and now they're going to be keeping it for a 3rd day after telling me they couldn't find a problem.
Anyone have any idea's whats up with my cursed 04 AT? (Not the first time I've taken it in with similar problems or with the CEL ligh on, this has to be my third or fourth trip in for only having it for a few months now with 17k miles.)

It seems the RX8 seems to have alot of problems with it. Like my 8, I just had to finally take it in today so that they can take a look at the idle problem also when just sitting at the light while the air conditioner is on.
It would idle real rough as if the engine is going to die when I have the AC on. Not only that a few days ago when starting from first gear, it would kind of boggle down before it would finally go smoothly.
I finally had to the time to take it to the dealer today even though it has been going on ever since I got the car. I was told it was because of a carbon buildup in the spark plugs and they that was replaced. The only thing left was to take a look at the remote as to why it is not working.
Two hours later I called to check that status and now I was told that something else has come up and they will have to replace the motor mounts and some other stuff in the engine.
I mean, I love my 8 and all but it jut seems to have so much trouble with it. I guess it is YMMV thing with the 8's. But I feel that down the road there is going to be other issues with it.
I don't know anymore. Only good thing is that all this work is covered under the warranty including the non working oem remote control at the moment. But what happends after if there are no warranty on it?
Right now I have about 45k miles on my 04 standard GT version 8.
Good luck to you cause I know I will need it down the road also.

update
I finally got back from vacation and this is what the dealer had done in 3 weeks time:
replaced my bad synchro between 3rd and 4th along with the shift forks...that's it.
They never visually inspected the cat so I can't say if it may be partially plugged. They didn't run a compression test because they could not replicate my power loss. I told them the circumstances (hot day, long drive) under which my problem occurred and that driving it in the morning when the temp is 80 for 20 miles was not going to work.
The car seems to behave almost normally now. I can still tell that it is sluggish and has a case of the jitters, but to someone who hasn't spent nearly as much time driving the car, it may not be that noticeable. I guess I'll have to wait until I take another long drive on a hot day and have it towed to a nearby dealer.
