Drive or Ship? That is the question.

I'm moving from upstate NY to Vegas...a 2300 mile road trip. Should I drive my RX8 there or ship it? I'm torn on what to do.

How well does your car run? I drove 6,400 miles, round-trip, last summer from Detroit to Dallas(17 hrs.), to Tucson(13 hrs.), to Vegas(9 hrs.), than Irvine Cali(6 hours), then Denver(14-15 hrs.), Chicago(22 hrs.), and back to Detroit(5 hrs.). All this on an engine that was installed only 3 days prior to my departure. New fluids all around and the car made it fine.

One thing about the 8; road trips are far more enjoyable in this car than your typical grocery-getter so your trip will go quicker than you think. To add to the fun, host a thread that chronicles your trip and make arrangements to meet up with other Club memebers.

well, with the way gas is going, it might be cheaper to ship it. If it isn't, then drive baby drive.

Thanks Charles...not a bad idea. I heard there's a big RX8 scene in Vegas too so I'm looking forward to that.

If I want to ship it in an enclosure and get insurance on it it'll be about $1600 or so. It's about $1k to ship, $400 for enclosure (which I'm not sure if it's worth it or not), and $200 for insurance (again I'm not sure if that's necessary)

I think gas will run about $500 or so.

hmm, 2300 miles.. let's assume your rx8 can squeeze out 250 miles to the tank so you will stop for gas about 10 times. 14 gallon fillups at a conservative $4.15 a gallon are $60. 10 fillups at $60 = $600 on gas.. factor in food and oil!

now.. is it cheaper to spend $600 on gas alone to drive it there or ship it?

Where abouts upstate are you? I'm from upstate NY (Watertown), but have lived in Vegas the last 11+ years. I'd be curious to hear info if you do drive.

ship it. Search and be patient and you will find a good company. Got mine shipped in the winter from iowa to california for 775 bucks. Took 2 weeks from time of order til seeing my car with an inch of salt on it (shipped in winter). My opinion, drive would be fun also.

So shipping went well for you then? I just know I'm going to be paranoid about getting scratched or something.

The only factor in my decision would be if I had enough time to drive. If that's not a factor then it would be me, the 8, sun roof back, Passport 9500i on, iPod blasting, windows down and a big smile on my face all the way.

... and that Charles R. Hill guy... he'll drive anywhere to play with cars!

i just got back from vegas and cali. My family owns a car transport buisness i could probably hook u up. pm me for phone number if youd like. 200 for insurance? i dont get that.. i know my truck and trailor i carry a million dollar policy on it so if anything happens to the car while its on my trailor my insurance takes care of it. depending if i can get a load of cars up that way so im not dead heading all the way up there. and that price you have is pretty good considering transporting a car usually runs about a dollar or so a mile

went very well except my car got extremely salty from the endless snow over the summit. He bottomed it out in front of my eyes but there was no damage, my cars lowered though.

I drove from Boston to the SF in 3 days in a Honda accord and it was a great trip.

I can only imagine an 8 would be more fun.

I can tell you that the car and the society that surrounds it make driving FAR more fun that flat-bedding it.
