Drove a Porsche Cayman - Im keeping my 8

I got a nice promotion at work and the $ is a lot better. I decided to test the waters of other cars. In my previous car search I loved the Boxster, but I didn't want the soft top. Porsche just released a Cayman for 2007. IMO it is a beautiful car. Supposed to be the best handling Porsche yet.

I guess my RX-8 has spoiled me. The Cayman's tach needs to be at 4500 for power just like my 8, but I had to shift at 7000. Not as much fun. As far as handling goes, I think my 8 wins here also. My 30k Mazda makes the 68k Porsche look like a waste of a lot of gas money. BTW the gas milage on the Porsche is a little better

In conclusion to those of you who think a more expensive sports car is better I must disagree. I'm taking my raise to the bank and saving for the 2010 Mazdaspeed, twin turbo, jet propelled, RX-8. I think I will pay cash.

That gas mileage on the Porsche is actually alot better. It's amazing what Porsche AND BMW can do with their 6 cyclinder engines.

Anyhow, did you try the S model or the basic Cayman model. I'm not sure if the basic model is out yet, but the S model should have more than enough power.

I'm assuming you're talking about the Cayman S? They run for about $60k. Are the 2007s even out yet?

If you are indeed talking about the S, then I'd have to ask: What are you smoking?

Yeah serious. Car and Driver got around 4.9 seconds to 60 last time they tested it. They also preferred it over the Lotus Exige!!!

0-60 in 5 seconds, 13.7 quarter mile, 255 lb-ft torque, dual-mode suspension, neat brakes. Worth the money, imo.

What does Car and Driver's preference have to do with kevsRX8's test drive and preference?

Yes, guys I said the 2007 Porsche Cayman. The "S" is about 10k more. The "S" would probably be worth the cash for the increased speed. The standary Cayman has a 0-60 of about 5.9 according to the dealer. I unfortunately don't have the extra cash for the "S". That is why I drove the NON S Cayman.

Base price on the Cayman is like $50k but if you have ever shopped for a Porsche you will realize that they are very fond of options. By the time you order what you really want you end up spending at least 5k-10k.

As far as the back-end goes I have to agree the only thing better is J Lo.

Ok, understood. Yeah I wouldn't want a base Cayman either. When you know there is an S model, getting the base model really sucks.

Why not check out a E46 M3?

M3 isn't a sports car no matter how much power and styling you put into it. They are good looking though.

I think I'm going to save the $ and buy the "S" next year.

I'm not ever selling the 8 though. It is way too unique.

Well I can't argue with that. The 8 is indeed one of the most unique cars on the road today.

Since you're gonna keep your 8, why not look into some force induction since you have some extra cash?

Or you could keep it and wait for a MS8 to come out in the future and get that.

DO IT MITCH!

So it seems the base Cayman is a rip off and the extra $10k on the S makes all the difference...hmm. I wonder what are the sales figures on the base...

Don't want to void the warranty and honestly I am not unhappy with the get up and go of my 8. More power is always better but Johnny Law looks at a sports car too closely anyway.

Porsche really was arrogant with its price on the Cayman S. But it's still a awesome car.

But they are sitting on the lot in Charlotte NC.

The Dealer doesn't even have a price list for the options. He was guessing at the prices by looking at the Boxster price list.

Awww don't be judgemental like that. If anything, the Boxster is what the ladies like.

Porsche's have always been drivers car. Even the Boxster is very well handling machine.

I've got a fantastic idea for you. Get a late model NSX!!!!

If I am going to get a late model it is going to be either a 2002 Viper (real power) or a Ferrari 512tr.

I will update everyone if I ever make a decision.

Viper may be "real power" but it's also a real brute. Not at all similar to the 8.

The NSX is one of the most looked over supercars in history. It handles like a dream, looks exotic, is plenty practical, and can be driven every day to work. So maybe it's not as quick as a supercar should be, but it's still a fantastic car that I would take over a Viper anyday.
