So first off i'd like to start off and say i just got my first RX-8 yesterday and i absolutely love it. It came with a mazdaspeed cold air intake unistalled. My Dumb question is what are the pro's and con's of this cold air intake? The seller said he had taken it off to smog the car and never ended up putting it back on, does it affect smogging the car? Thanks in advance!
Cons: It's not stock?
I was going to get this CAI before and I wondered about it affecting smog, but.. 2 things
1: It's just bringing in air, unlike changing how the fuel & air mixture leaves through the exhaust, that affects smog
and 2: It's a mazdaspeed aftermarket product, they wouldn't make it legal for use in California if it wouldnt even pass smog, that's some lost potential buyers, as there are a lot of RX8s in the SoCal region
Also, welcome

I have a serious dumb question,
Is it possible to retrofit a previous 13B, such as from an FD , and retain the RX8's engine management, Im assuming using all of the Renesis's sensors and electrical fittings. I understand the intake and exhaust are different, but with modifications ?Has this been done and to what success ?

Question, so I just got my Rx8 a week ago, and am loving it. But I am getting way worse gas mileage than what I've heard around here. My car is an 2004 6 speed (everything is stock) with 37k miles on it, and I'm getting under 15 mpgs's with about 75% of my driving on the highway and I drove it like a granny at first.
My guess is that the Spark plugs, coils, and wires haven't been changed. Could that account for about the 6 mpg's I'm missing?

15 mpg sounds a tiny bit low for hwy (though others may argue). Plugs/ coils could be an indicator. When were they last changed?
Granny driving isn't the best. You need to make sure to redline every now and then to clear out the carbon build-up ("a redline a day keeps the carbon away"). Try shifting between 3-4.5k rpm's. Clean your air filter and MAF sensor. Check your CAT for clogging/ destruction.

Ewwwwww well .. ok that's what you and I may do ....
But I don't think that is really necessary.
AMF I just sold a set of plugs to a member who hasn't changed them in a 100k +-
I was like what ... naaaahhhhh
And this guys no's his car stuff ... he said it hasn't needed them.
Yeah I KNOW LIKE WTF
Just say'n

2nd quick dumb question for me. Are the NGK Iridium plugs only found online? or will a local autostore have them? Same question but for coils also? Thanks, Quite the noob in this department. P.s. Im LOVING the torque of the 8!!

And, are you serious about the torque???
OEM plugs are fine. It's what I'm sticking to (unless I go FI... )

1- So is the 16x coming or what? Every day it's a new story. Active-G this, Sky-G that. Releasing in 2011, 2012, 2013... then not before 2014. What exactly is the problem? They can't meet their mpg/tq expectations?
2- Why when you compare cars with similar displacements, turbo cars usually have high mpg, but rotary is the opposite?
3- Why is it not viable to have a twin turbo setup like the rx7 on the 8? I asked this on another forum and they told me people who ask for that don't understand how the 8 works...
Ok, I'm pretty technical, but I'm not a rotary expert, so tell me, why does the exhaust port location preclude the possibility of a twin turbo?

OOh more more, does a cold air intake really make any appreciable difference in this car? I'm using the one with the Greddy kit which is just ridiculous. It basically lies in the HOTTEST part of the engine bay. Would it be better to buy a different intake system or build some sort of makeshift heat-shield for that intake?

1- don't know
2- Not true - a turbo rotary will get better mileage than NA at same speed/acceleration rate .
3- The twin turbo on an RX7 was only 'twin' so that one turbo could spool up early and the other was for higher in the power band . Conversely a well designed modern turbo can achieve the same thing without the need for all the additional complexity . In theory it could be done - but you would just be feeding the chickens for bragging rights.

if you brake and it feels like it pulsates while you brake, or it sort of has brake pressure but then loses that pressure back and forth, then they're warped
also they have to be so and so millimeters, you'll have to search this time
i said it was a stupid question, not a hard question

Right, the rx7 turbos were staggered if I recall, one was slightly smaller. One thing that bugs me about the rx8 which rx7 didn't seem to have at all was that insufferable lag before 2.9k rpm. The Greddy turbo ,for example ,is tiny, so I can imagine on a bigger turbo the lag must be even worse. If it were a large engine with a big displacement I'd say big deal, you probably still have a ton of torque. I notice the 3071R replacement that MM offers/ no longer offers? spools "just about as quickly" as the Greddy one, I get that's not the point of it,I'm just saying. It'd be great to have a little more front end power , 10-15 hp would be fine, I'm not looking to burn tires here, just not be passed by 1982 corollas for that first second and a half .
Ok so stupid question #204, which I'll save for posterity, if MM still did offer that upgrade, which do you feel offers a smoother acceleration curve? That upgrade or the BNR?
#205 Are there any California C.A.R.B. turbos/sc's or kits out there?

?
?
Given the chance I would go for the new GTX 3071 (or 76) over either of those .

Aftermarket cold air intakes do little over the stock cold air intake.
However if you bought your car used it someone had installed a crappy (for the lack of a better term) "hot air intake", you will notice a difference.
