I agree! The flaming is just unnecessary. However some make it a habit of not using the search function because they know it's easier to start a thread and have those that have been here longer direct them to the appropriate thread. They make it a habit of not using the search function period. Eventually it pisses people off.

so why oh why is it such a bad idea to restrict new members from starting new threads until they reach a certain post count or time frame?

we have endless repeated threads from people who sign up and their very first post is a new thread asking something like if people know about the lack of torque that the 8 has.

because then you'll have these new members posting these same questions in totally random threads that are only distantly remotely related to their question at hand.

there is no prominent, upfront FAQ -- the FAQ button on top doesn't have any car-related info, so I bet people click there and then assume that there's no other faq. i voiced my problems with the current "faq" as is in another thread.

so while i don't want to say that you're asking for it, you (as in this forum and its regulars) sure ain't helping it much.

we should have a separate WELCOME AREA, where you can introduce yourself and ask the n00b questions without the fear of being flamed to heck.

I think this might be a good thread to function as a motivational search image repository. I don't own any personally, but I know many of you do... besides I need a good laugh today.

Seriously.. nap time is over. Take some responsibility and quit whining. Searching isn't hard. And this is my vote for thread of the week:
https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-discussion-3/brake-break-78355/

I don't flame because I would get banned... not worth it.

New user probation sounds reasonable to me.....

The search also brings most recent results up front. All the productive discussion on gas mileage occurred ages ago and doesn't show up in the first page of the search.

So someone who is not familiar with all the perils of this forum's search is likely to give up early. This is why you see "I searched and searched" so often--but didn't search well enough.

With all due respect and not really aimed at tiggerlee or anyone else, but this is exactly the computer geek "you are too stupid" attitude that probably turns plenty of good people away (and IMO is the bane of the computer industry).

And that is precisely what we want - here and in society in general.
It is ridiculous how much hand holding we do. Failure is motivating. If it isn't, you are a failure.
It is just that simple.

I think that very few of us would actually call someone anything of the sort should this arise. We simply point out that the question is incongruous, non-sequitur or gratuitous. The poster can then draw a conclusion about their own stupidity from that.
If someone is insulted by being scolded for not searching it would be because they knew they were wrong to ask in in the first place.

Yeah? If they can find the 'new thread' button and understand how it works, they can find the 'search' button and understand.

I would think a person who is an internet newbie would be quicker to understand what 'search' means than to know what a thread is, let alone making a new one.

Not sure what the deal is, but I have posted more than what my post count indicates.

Prime example.

What does that have to do with this thread at all?
Did you find the thread about that elsewhere on the forum?
Did you read the FAQ about what does and does not count?

its because the powers that be decided to turn off the post count in the MW forum. so people who mostly post there are not getting an accurate post count ...

ADMIN, if you turn off the post count there, you cant then require people to have a specific count in order to start a thread. the lounge being turned off, i understand ... but i have no idea why the regional forum is off ...

Uh, yes there is.

And I am superior, but that has nothing to do with being right.

And if you were wondering about discrepancies, a simple search revealed:

ok nice try on the edit add mr superior!

BUT it still doesnt answer the question we were asking. and it wasnt about lounge posts (no one is arguing that). Gray-8 posts in the MW forum, yet at some point in september someone somewhere turned off the post count in that particular forum. so now if you require a certain post count for new posters, at least turn on his local forum post count.

and your search results do not answer the question either.

so i guess your superiority didnt help you on this one ...

I agree with Poolside- this is the best way to respond if you are going to.

Well geez Zoom - get to work!! We all know that updating the FAQ is much more entertaining than the lounge. Besides, you have nothing better to do!
