The real question should be, those who had engine problems that require a replacement. Did Mazda do the change with no questions asked or did they give you any hard times because you did your own oil changes/maintenance.
ditto, I'm in southern Ontario, Canada normally Hot Summer and Cold Winter, not this year!

I am trying 10W-30 this time around, but I had my mechanic put 5W-20 on the records.

Previously, I had mostly used 5W-30, but most likely the first owner used 5W-20. But I bought at 12K miles.

Pondering synthetic but so far just dino.

If I got a dollar for every oil thread, I'd be hella rich.

Motul 300V Competition 15W50 but I dont live in the same climate.

Motul works really really well with Rotaries.

I use 5w20, but I agree with spin and eric. I know some other car forums they have their stock oil pressure, and the manufactor says to keep around that pressure, but they don't specify any type of oil to really use just the regular options. In time I will be getting some gauges so does anyone know what our stock pressure is?

Bah... I've had heart set on 5w30, but now I see that most of the Cali guys are going 10w30/40. Hmm, what to do??

I can sympathize with your concern - that after having an engine replacement (sounds like open heart surgery) you think more about what actually is best for the engine to make it last "this time".

..as you're in a hot as hell place, why not 10-30 or even 20w-50 oil if you experience extreme conditions? Not mentioned here yet...for the synth crowd - and anyone who wonders what makes a 'good' oil ... Idemitu sells these weights "especially for rotary engines"?.

What does that mean - "especially for rotary engine"? Looking thru the feature benefit knockoff list at http://www.idemitsu-usa.com/page_211.htm, you have to be impressed with the rotary-issues focused verbage. The additive formulation deals with rotary apex seal deposits, power sealing, coking, high rpm wear load & friction, and improving metal-to-metal film/shear strength.

Taken from the Racing Beat gauge kit install guide, " Oil pressure at operating temperature: 15-80 PSI "

heh, studying up for when my gauges come in.

That's a wide range there. I think it might be around one setting though like 78 psi on some cars. As long as you can stay within that psi it shouldn't matter what oil you use, some area's would probably be fine at 5w20, while others at higher, just to keep the psi in spec, just my opinion don't flame me on this just correct me if I'm wrong.

I read the article however there are two things going on:
There is the oil people use for the overall health of the engine and then there is the question of what gets injected and if it's enough.

I use 10-40 because I think 5-20 is too thin for the overall health but I premix too with 4 ounces of 2 stroke oil because I don't think the oil injected reaches everywhere it should.

What the guy in the article seemed to be saying was that the weight of the oil was the cause of the seal failure.
Lack of oil and carbon buildup is the real issue.

I alternate between RP-10w30 and Redline 50WT, depending on the time of year.

From other car forums, I've read people say that you should avoid using Royal Purple for street driving due to the fact that it's designed for racing and therefore has a very low concentration of cleaners, which is bad for daily driving. Can anyone comment on that?

Idk very much about the royal purple... But I have some rx8 buddies who use royal purple as daily drivers. But I wouldn't recommend that.

The oil pump is rpm driven so it will fluctuate and I've seen very little difference in overall pressure based on oil viscosity. It has more to do with your oil filters flow capability.

Above 1500rpm the oil pressure exiting the filter is about 65-70psi depending on temp. At idle it's around 15-20psi.

Thanks for that info shaun, it clears alot of things up for me, probably will be experimenting in time when I get some gauges.

I know that we all speculate that Mazda recommends 5w-20 in the US for emissions and cat life, but has Mazda ever made any official comment as to why they chose that for the US? If there's another reason I'd assume that they'd want to share.

my engine sees 550 kPa (79.77 psi) most of the time. sometimes under certain condition like going uphill while pushing it hard I might see 600 kPa (87 Psi)

stock bypass opens at around 80 psi. This is with 20w50.

With 5w20, pressure will always be lower than my 20w50 number, maybe 10-50 kPa lower, and after about 1000 something miles, the pressure will drop even more, so yeah 5w20 is junk.

btw for the reference, 09+ model calls for even higher oil pressure, maybe Mazda wants to make up for the 5w20 junk that they recommend, the "recommended pressure" is much much higher than 04-08 model. so is 15-80 psi stock for 04-08 enough ? doubt that.
