Engine Problem

I parked my rx8 and turned the engine off but when i got out of the car, i noticed the some kind of noise was coming from the engine. I couldnt tell if it was the fan or the engine that was still on. I got back into my car and i put the keys back in and turned it( i did not turn the engine on). I took the key off again and this time the engine did not make any noise. This happened to me a couple times before and i was wondering if this is a problem. I dont know if i should report to the dealer. Someone pls help me.

It's just the fan. Nothing to worry about.

nycgps was being a bit sarcastic, but just about everyone is sarcastic to newbies with already-answered questions that can be found using the search button.

oh well.

it's just cooling it off, saranlinux.

"Once the engine coolant exceeds a preset temperature, an electrical cooling fan turns on. It will continue running for about 10 minutes afer the ignition switch is turned off."—Owner's Manual, p. 7-18

Just let the fan run - it may stay on for 10 minutes, and it's doing something useful. Defeating it that way is not good.

You really should spend some time reading the owner's manual. Especially with you being a new driver, there is a lot of basic info that might not occur to you on your own.

What would he search if he has no idea what the problem is? How would he know to search "fan"? How would he know what to look for in the owner's manual?

This is not one of those cases where the noobie is blatantly lazy. It seems to be the same people who like to bash over and over. In this case, the thread starter is in the right. My thinking is correct.

i already knew about the fan issue a long time ago from reading on this forum. i check my quick guide manual and the full manual from time to time when certain issues come up. issues are few and far between and memory for details in a manual come and go. those kinds of comments about reading the manual are weird and unnatural and indicate the person has some sort of "common sense" problem.

my situation with the thread i started in the other forum has nothing to do with reading or not reading the manual. my initial analysis, along with the help of another forum member, was pretty much right on. damage was minimized and appears to have been temporary and problem seems to have been corrected. evidence is in that car is revving better than ever, shifts are super smooth with little throttle delay, no funny smells or bogging indicating cat is ok, mpg appears to have gone up by 1 to 1.5 mpg. this is amazing considering my car is about to hit 100,000 miles.

This is very simple - no searching required. Noobs just need to read the FAQ subforum before posting. This question and many others are covered there.

How would a noobie know that the FAQ subforum is the place to go first? How obvious is it?

Well, It is on the VERY top of the page. Right there next to (on the same line as )the search button.

Do not take it personally. We just have a ton of trolls and newbs here that bring up these very same questions every few days.

That's a good point! I wish there was something eye-catching, that looked like a banner ad or maybe even a pop-up ad—except instead of being an ad, it would say something like:

"New to the RX-8? Wondering about checking oil, flooding, stuff like that?? Check out our FAQ first!"

derka derka...how obvious is the FAQ? It SHOULD be very. but apparently not everyone thinks that their issue could possibly have happened to one of the other ~160,000 RX-8 owners.

The way you guys rip into people with genuine questions of concern is attrocious.

Instead of jumping on the 'do a search' bandwagon, how about you put yourself in their shoes; they are genuinely upset and need answers now, *particularly* if they are new to the Rx8. So they come to the one place where there is a fountain of expert knowledge only to be bagged out by their own comrades. Nice guys, really nice.... makes for such a welcoming environment.

but that's the problem...people who don't search around first are those that expect to be spoon-fed. No one likes a spoiled brat. To use this thread as an example, if you read the manual you can easily figure out that it's not a problem. I mean, you made this huge investment into the 8. The least you can do is read up on it, don't you think? Wouldn't you think common sense would tell you that the user manual would explain A LOT about the car? (Including the cooling fan)
