Ethos Fuel Saver Product Review
Since the RX-8 was listed as a "secret gas guzzler" by Yahoo i figured i would ask if any of you have tried Ethos which claims to boost fuel economy. If it doesn't work anyone have any good suggestion for getting better gas mileage? Im averaging about 17mpg 60% freeway 40% city.

Put this in your 8 and watch it blow up.. It's leaning out the mixture, so HC and CO emissions go down (they neglect to mention that NOx emissions will go up..)
Put it in your Civic, sure.. Not your 8

The basic package is $53.95 and includes two 16 oz bottles which is basically enough to do 2 full tanks of gas in the RX-8. That's basically $27 PER TANK that you are adding. With gas over $3 per gallon, that's another 8-9 gallons of fuel that you could have had instead per tank. You'll need to increase your gas mileage by something on the order of 50% percent in order for it to even BREAK EVEN! We know this isn't going to happen. Even if your milege increases at all, it will be very little. Maybe one or 2 mpg max. So now you are negative financially.
I know, they offer $100 rebate in gasoline (actually anything at the gas station). It's in the form of 4 coupons for $25 each. For every $100 you spend at the gas station, they rebate you $25. Notice they don't give any details about how the rebate works. You'll find that out after you register and send them your money. You basically have to save your gas receipts and have each station sign off on it. Once you accumulate $100, mail your receipts in and they'll send you a coupon. Once you get this coupon in 6-8 weeks, you can apply it towards your next gas purchase. You get to do this 3 more times.
It gets to be such a pain in the *** that you most people don't finish it and on the average, the company makes money. Even if you do use all of the coupons, you are still only ahead by a small amount but it took months of effort to get it. They are relying on people getting excited about it and handing over their money up front. It says they'll double your money back. What's the catch? The catch is that you have to finish the entire rebate program. That's a huge part of the whole thing. However you need to prove you didn't get the advertised mileage increase. How are you going to do that? How hard will it be to dispute? Did you keep track of it and turn it in with the company BEFORE you bought their product? Probably not! I guarantee they have never paid out the refund to anyone. I've received those gas cards from time to time while I've been in the real estate business. They are too much of a pain in the *** when you get them free!
Sure they're large enough that they can afford to advertise on an IRL car. People are stupid and hand over their money. The more legit they can appear, the more money they can bring in. It doesn't matter if they are proven to be frauds in 5 years. They'll already be rich by then. Al Unser will endorse it because he's paid to. Notice his statement says "maximum engine performance". That's a pretty blanketed statement.
What this product probably does is to lower your emissions. That it have no doubt can be done. If you are really that "green" that you would spend this much money to improve your emissions output, you probably aren't driving an RX-8!!!
The big "gas secret" is that there is no gas secret. There is no magical 200 mpg carburetor. There is no miracle additive that will increase mileage. Gas has not been purposely formulated to hold back your mileage so you buy more. These are all myths that have been brought forward by conspiracy theorists. Forget this product. Save your money. Spend it on gas!

There is much more than 20% that is wasted as heat..
Depending on how rich you are running, a good 20% of the gas can go out the tailpipe... However the correct answer for that is tuning, not blindly tweaking the fuel mixture...
I'm waiting for someone to put this stuff in a high performance car and blow it to smithereens..
And of course their line about reducing emissions is bull... They never talk about NOx..

Wow, detail response... Good catch on the rebate thing... I prefer a check of $100 to be send to me.
But actually, it says to use 1 to 2 oz per 10 gal gas, so basic package, 32 oz total should be able to treat at least 160 gal. if you use 2 oz per 10 gal., so wouldn't that be about 53.95+3.95 shipping = $57.9 per 10 tanks (tank is 15.9 gal, but using 16 gal for easy calc), which is about 5.79 per 16 gal tank in addition to what you are already paying to fuel up
I can't be 100% sure of my math, just shift early and light on the gas pedal will improve your milage. Some also used premix in their RX-8, it improve mpg slightly...

I must have read something wrong about how much you need. I need to go redo all the math. Either way the real way you are "saving" is by utilizing the rebate. Most people won't go to all that trouble.
