Ouch, really hurts to see that silver go Brian. I'm glad you are ok though. Which freeway did this happen? I'm having a hard time understanding what the slight right divider you hit was. Anyways, with that much damage, you are lucky to get away with just a scratch.

Other than learning emergency maneuvers, I'd like to say that investing on good tires are a must. I know I've had close calls with my stock Potenzas. They were greasy.

First of all, I am sorry to hear about your accident.

I was about to post that I thought that the very first time you hit the divider you’d probably lost a front wheel (or somehow bent your front suspension). Which is what I had thought had caused you to lose control of the car despite DSC.

Now that you’ve posted that you had DSC off, it makes more sense to me. I was in similar situation where in very heavy rain I switched to the right lane quickly to avoid debris on the road, and I must have hit an oil spot because the rear end came loose. I quickly corrected, but I over did it and the rear end started to slide going the opposite direction (left). Just as I was about to slam the side of my car onto a truck driving on the left lane, DSC came to the rescue. The fuel got cut off instantaneously, I heard some ABS action and magically the 8 just straightened itself out. No collision, just my heart pounding.

At first I felt somewhat stupid for having had a computer rescue me. When I thought more about it though, the yaw sensors in the car can probably detect a slide much sooner than a human can. Also, as far as I know only the computer can break each wheel individually if necessary.

Since that incident, I’ve had more respect for the RX-8 - in more ways than one -.

Thanks for making me slow down (at least for today). I totally think a Speed Class/Defensive Driver Class would help your insurance?! The one here looks super fun..and if you crash, it's not your car!!! Your next car should be a tank

the only time I had my car sideways was in a turn (taking a 90 way too fast) with DSC was off. Now i leave it on all the time, it very hard to even lose control with it on.

I was feeling very bad for you until I read that. Why anyone would turn the DSC off for daily driving, I dont know . No one can say for certain if it would of prevented the accident, but it couldn't of hurt.

How fast were you going? Isn't the 8 one of the hardest cars on the road to flip?

I'm sorry that you lost your car, I baby mine also and would feel terrible if I wrecked it.

Sorry to hear about the prang. I too remember your first thread, I recall congratulating you in it. It's a shame you've lost a treasured family gift.....

You were foolish driving with DSC off, a fact which you must surely now appreciate. I won't harp on that.....you feel bad enough already. There are some lessons to be learnt from this incident though, and that's what I'd like to go through.

The damage this car sustained, and the fact you exited in one piece, say a fair bit about the structural integrity of the RX-8. The amount of damage, and your description of what happened, point out you were travelling way too fast for the conditions......you know that, that's why this thread is entitled "Everyone drive safe....". Drive within your capabilities, allow a margin for error.

Advanced driving instruction: Have you had any? I doubt you have, because you would have had the DSC turned on. You would also know that this statement, " .....and hit the brakes (I know, bad mistake)", was incorrect. When in doubt, throw the anchor out. When you have lost control, hitting the brakes is exactly the right thing to do. Every advanced driving instructor in the world dispenses the same advice.

Do yourself a favour and put a little money aside. Spend it on a few lessons.......your family deserve to see something good come from all this.

How did the glass from the sunroof hold up? If it didn't break even though you flipped it, thats pretty good. Oh btw, is your engine still in tact? I have dibs, j/k.

I'm a true believer, DSC on unless I go to the track someday. There's no reason for me too push the limits on the street. Glad you're OK. And what is it with Silver 8s? It's likea curse.

wow man thats terrible. Atleast you're ok buddy.. My cousin also got into a accident in his s2000 couple weeks ago. He lost controll in the rain and hit a poll, those huge light polls, it came crashing dow. we all thought it was going to fall on him.

He came out fine so thats all that counts

Sorry to hear, you will never know if DSC would have helped or not, but this is a perfect example (from your description of what happened) of what DSC is supposed to do.

You say you hit a divide in the road, and thats what set everything else into motion...what do you mean by divide? Like a seam in the pavement, the kind you get when they lay the 2 lanes at different levels? or do you mean like a curb or what? That would help me better understand what happened.

Anyway, again sorry to hear, glad your ok! There is NO REASON in any car to turn the safety systems off while driving on public roads....it doesnt affect MPG or Power in a way that you will really notice, and there is nothing you cant LEGALY do with the DSC on vs off.

Please everyone, leave these sytems in place, if not to save your own life, than to maby save someone else!

Im not trying to knock on you or anything, accidents happen, sometimes things just go wrong, it happens to everyone now and then, learn from it and move on...dont dwell on the past!

Also as a side note, more and more insurance companys are looking at the status (on/off) of DSC, TCS and other similar driver aids after colisions, and they are keeping track of the accidents, possible causes, ect.

Just trying to say that one day (maby soon) you could have an accident and if your DSC or wahtever was turned off they might not pay the claim! So thats another reason to leave those things on, CYA (cover your ***).

Wow...pictures like that break my heart, but as stated I'm glad your OK. GOD BLESS you...he sure was with you on that day!

I've said it time and time again, while on the road (while we all do stupid things at times) no one should be testing the limits of their car.

I'm glad you didn't hurt anyone else and that it seems you already are learning your lesson on this.

The RX8 did a great job protecting you but next time maybe you don't need more power(talking about turbo and more power after something like this???), just more time behind the wheel. Like I said, we all do stupid things sometimes...but hopefully with each stupid thing we will learn to be smart in the future.

I hope you "feel" better soon since I've seen what a car accident can do to people's nerves.

I divit in the road, it is like,

Say I am driving on the freeway, and then like the road dips a little because for a little while, it's a different type of road, maybe old, maybe newer than the road I was on. And that is only for like a couple of yards, and then it switches back to the regular road I was on, and you go up, when my car hit the divit coming up out to get back on the "regular road", that is when I lost control.

So say that's to road and I'm traveling left to right, where the \ and / are is where the little down and then up bumps are on that little section of the road. It's hard to explain, but I am sure all of you guys have experienced them before.

I go today after school to go look at the car and see what's going to happen :-( I'll keep you guys posted and thanks for all your praise and concern.

Ohhh, I get it...

My mother-in-law spun out in her minivan in a similar situation, nearly hit head on by a huge truck.

Since that, and now your story, I will make sure to be EXTRA safe while driving on those type of roads.

Those dips are pretty common on I-87. Is that where you had your accident? I think the construction going on right now has to do with fixing those dips.
