Everyone wants to race, what do you do?
Perhaps it's in my head but it seems everyone wants to race me when I am in the RX-8. I am competitive in nature but also getting older and am trying to grow out of racing everyone who appears to be passing me on a highway or coming around me from another lane.
I am curious what other owners observe and do. If it's clearly a car that wouldn't have a snowballs chance in hell of beating the RX I tend to ignore them, basically implying a "why would I waste my time/gas" on a Civic or an Explorer? I have to admit though that if it's a car that at least poses a challenge (or if the driver is a total dick), I feel like putting them in their place by showing them the back end
I live in Seattle (which compared to CA, CT and MA) has much more courteous drivers so it's odd that this happens so frequently. What does everyone else experience and do in these situations?

When i see people catch up, I like to speed up, and see what the other person has. Then whoever slows down first loses? Then I usually give them a thumbs up to call it cool.
Revving there engine, to me, means they're really annoying, so if I know I can take them, I'll just eat them alive or do as RXMATE and be all,
Flashing lights, i've only gotten that after being messed with, and when either of us 'wins'
I really would rather keep it on the track, but driving speed limit gets boring. Plus if you're cool and the other person is cool, you can always make another friend.

Oh crap, I can only imagine. Tell me a cop in an Explorer doesn't love pulling over 8's and other assorted sports cars. I remember when I was younger in CA getting pulled over by a marked state police van. I thought the damn thing was a paddy wagon and didn't realize it would actually make a traffic stop. Incidentially this was on Halloween and I was dressed like Hugh Hefner. Cop didn't even crack a smile.

Good post Codhey. What probably is in my head is that folks are being jerks when they want to race. I'm sure some are but most are probably just trying to have fun. I'm going to try having a different attitude when I do race and try and have a good time with it. If that doesn't work I will use mysql101's advice and just beat their ***!

It was pretty funny. If my girlfriend would have dressed like a bunny we would have got out of it. Instead she went as a witch. Needless to say that costume wasn't getting us out of any tickets.

Im getting the same problem, today 2 mustang drivers wanted to race. One was a dick and was reving his exhaust next to me. The other one wanted to be discreet, and race, but i said no, dont feel like it. Even though it could of been fun smoking them. "Joking"

I get challenged to races all the time. A Mazda6 was at a stoplight (not a mazdaspeed6, but it was V6). It revved and took off. I gave chase for a little while but when he got up to 100+ mph on a main route through my town, I gave up. Absolutely not willing to go anywhere near that fast on a public road.
Some I just ignore, others I give chase. In my 2002 Eclipse, I never got a second glance. Everyone wants to race the RX8, though.

Hence, keep it legal.
Another hence, the 8 can outperform those mustangs on any track.

Also, slow does not necessarily mean courteous, every day I see people doing **** like left lane camping, taking a long-*** time to move when a light changes, or generally just not giving a **** about any other cars and pedestrians around them when they go to change lanes or something.

I hate punks who just rev their *** next to me and think they're good. there was a BMW in chinatown the other day like they got something to show or something (got 2 friends in his car) Its funny that he kept revving his engine but at the end he got stuck at the red light, while I gave him a nice Rotary sound plus my middle finger.
On highway, I ignore these punks most of the time, but sometime when they **** me off (like cut into my lane right in front of me) I never try to overpass them, I would follow them, they speed up I speed up, they slow down I slow down, until they hit their harzard singal, hey I have a lot of time to spend and it actually works.

just ignore them. Street racing is stupid and has a way of getting innocent people killed. I don’t understand the street racing thing anyway because it usually has absolutely nothing to do with the driver and everything to do with the car. It isn’t often that you will get two evenly matched cars racing on the street.
