Is excessive oil use an indicator of the recall issue?

Does anybody have any idea whether excess oil consumption is an indicator of the problem that's causing the upcoming recall?

My 8 -- which only has a little over 3K miles on it and has been perfect so far -- has used about a quart per 1,500 miles. I'm using Valvoline 5W20, not synthetic.

But I have no idea if that's "normal" for the RX-8.

Yes. Next your transmission will go due to the oil in it. Your tires will turn against you and your cat will swallow your car.

Oil consumption depends on your driving style. Under normal driving conditions yours sounds spot on.

Early in their life oil consumption is higher to break it in. I bought a bunch of oil in the first 7K miles, then it just sat around. But when the motor climbs to high revvs (8K), oil consumption skyrockets.
