its been freezing in NY too, so far what i end up doin is wakin up earlier go start the car and then come back and get ready to go to work. by the time im done the car is fully warmed up. the only thing i been noticing is that the car spins the tires a lot takin off and it feels like **** for the first 1o mins of shifting gear but after a while it feels normal.

Does sound like a belt squeal.

Was -11 in Chicago when I woke up Monday morning - in my garage it was a balmy 3 degrees. Started right up, ran fine. Gearbox felt like it was full of mollasses until the engine warmed, but that's not surprising.

Only high-pitched whining I heard was from my children when they found out the kids going to the school district across town were off school due to the cold, but they had to go. Now that's high pitched whining!

I just got my RX-8 this last weekend and on Sunday it reached -30 F in the morning. The 8 was not happy when I turned it on, but I did experience the same stuff as you guys, the high RPMs, the whining, and also the chuggish shifts for the first few minutes. But it was above zero today and it sounds a helluva lot better than it was on Sunday. I think you'll be okay SpeedB, just let her warm up.

Sounds about right ... I've noticed the high whining too. Had the techs take a look and they are convinced it's the cold belt. Same as you, when the car warms up, it goes away.

I've had throttle bodies whistle in the cold from throttle plate icing until the water temperature come up in other cars. However, i've not had temperatures below 16 at my house this year.

Its not only bad to drive off without warming up, but its also bad to warm it up for too long w/o moving it.

Just so you know.

a few mins is fine, but dont over do it. (however long you take to get ready)

I have the same thing but I wouldnt worry about it.

Everything moves slower when cold, Just give the parts some time to work. It should be fine. The noise probably came from the parts not getting enough lube cuz its too cold (Try to touch the engine parts when cold, ur hands better be clean or else its going to stick ... dont ask me how I know !~)

I have a little belt squeak after I let her sit for a week or so. A different issue--I recently had my air pump replaced b/c it would squeal loud as hell on cold start-ups.
