It finally happened.
My 8 flooded. I have the M flash.
Had it towed to the dealership after repeated attempts to start it. They have it working, but say that I need an oil change because the repeated startings seem to have put gas in the oil?? Can that be true?

I've read some posts where peeps have been complaining of the gas smell when checking their oil.
I'm sure you're also going to get posts requesting what you did (start it then shut it off immediately), so you might as well give some details :o

I started it while it was cold and changed my mind about going, so I immediately shut it off. Tried to start it a few hours later and it was a no go. I got on the radio and said "Houston, We have a problem" and someone yelled through my window "shuddup A-hole"! Then the aliens came..

Very common after a bad flooding to get gasoline in the crankcase - rotary or piston. The extra fuel washes down the cylindar (or rotor housing) walls, leaks past the oil seals, which are designed to hold back oil but not low-viscosity gasoline. Repeated attempts to start it without having the car in "flood clear" mode just make it worse.
FYI, if you do flood:
1) Let the car sit for 10-15 minutes
2) Get in the car, put the pedal all the way to the floor and hold it. This shuts off the fuel injectors and allows the engine to spin without more fuel spraying into it.
3) Crank the engine for 10 seconds (sing happy birthday to yourself - takes about 10 seconds). If engine doesn't start, key off, wait one minute
4) Repeat step 3. If the engine is starting to catch as you're coming up to 10 seconds, don't back off the starter!!!! Keep cranking, though I wouldn't exceed 20 seconds of total crank time.
I flooded mine once before I got the M Flash, and got it started on the third try in flood clear mode.

Didn't I create a poll for post M flash floods after mine did it on Sunday night? I got my car back now and I have the hotter plugs (Foothills told me they were already in my car back in April... ). They got my car back today and it feels peppier but that could be due to the crappy old mitsu mirage they had me driving. Cars back now and it's driving good. Seems to start up faster though for the most part I didn't know there was a lag before.
Sorry to here about your car Guy.

Im not even sure they replaced my plugs :o My invoice just says deflooded and reflashed PCM.. I asked about this because I already had M flash.. they said it was because of the low battery.. Hmm anyway it runs just as well as before :D

I've been fairly paranoid about flooding. My FC used to flood even when it was fully warmed up. I used to have nightmares that it would be flooded one night while I was in the wrong part of town, and you can fill in the rest.
So with the 8, I have yet to turn it off cold, but as soon as it hits the running temp, then I'll do it.

I tried it too. Didn't work for me either. And I pulled my car out of the driveway so we could pick some friends up at the airport in my wifes' car. I let it warm up to about 1/4 on the temp guage and revved it for 10 seconds at 3.5k rpms. Then I shut it down. It was about 6 or 7 hours later that I tried to start the car again.

You guys tried it, but did you sing "Happy Birthday" that really is the key. :p Just joking, I thought that was an off-the-wall example.
Anyway, that is pretty similar to my procedure with the FC. One time it took me more than half the day to get the damn thing started, but I was stubborn and refused the get it towed. The answer with that car was to have a fuel pump cut switch installed. Then whenever it flooded no more fuel would be added until the engine fired up and I flicked the switch. But with the M Flash, it was my understanding that this stopped extra fuel from going into the combustion chamber all together?
