first accident - stupid mistake

ya so i was in my first "accident" about an hour ago and i just made a huge mistake

i was going through a drive thru doing lunch and i was stopped after i just ordered so im sitting there for about 30 secs and a feel a little bump so i was i pulled up a little and got out of the car the guy rolls down his window and its an older "gentleman" about 60 in a big truck and i said i think you just tapped my bumper and he looked out and was like i didnt feel anything i cant see nothing wrong so i was feeling the bumper and looking at it and didnt see anything then he started going on about how he didnt think anything happened and i was probably wrong , there were people behind us honking and stuff and i am really shy and non confrontational so i didn't want to get in an argument with him because im 16 and he would probably win, so i was just pissed off and got in my car and drove forward i got my food and then pulled out of the drive through because i didnt want to cause any disruption to the people behind me and i got out and started to look again and the guy just got his food and drove away so i get home and examine it more closly and there is a few straches and a gauge about the size of a quarter in my bumper and im pissed off. i know i made a huge mistake, i should have called the police or got his license plate number but i plead ignorance and lack of experience to my parents anyway ya i sucks that im stuck with the bill just because i didnt have the B@LLS to stick up to some guy

the only thing i can think of is to get the secuirty tapes from the drive through but i dont know if its worth all of hassle. :

don't hold your breath with any security video. i work with the security industry and i have a hard time getting people to give up video to me (and forget about it if it's the golden arches). plus the video probably isn't trained on that area and probably won't get much more than a grainy video that is useless. and since this is the real world and not CSI, don't think that you'll get a grainy video turned into crisp clear plate numbers or a scene of the accident. if you really want to you can ask the manager but i wouldn't expect much from them.

Live & learn. You should never be afraid to stand up for something - especially when you know you're right. Sounds like he knew you were right and talked you out of it.

Oh, anyone behind you in line who's "inconvenienced" can ALWAYS F-off. If they're too ignorant to be patient for a few extra minutes they don't even deserve your consideration. If their car had been bumped they would expect you to be patient.

My friend recenty pulled into a parking space and someone opened the door in the next space and whacked his passenger door.

My friend didn't look to closely becuase he thought it was just some surface paint.

Once he got home and saw that there was actually a dent he was mad at himself for not looking closer and getting the person's name/license/contact information.

Its the senior syndrome I had the same thing with some old lady that hit my car from the back and she scratched the corner bumper(not my 8 in my first car which is my corolla) I looked at her and she was "Are you alright Shonny boy" and I was like just go cause all I can think about at that time was my grandmother. I was 18 when this happened and when I got home I got chewed out by my parents pretty bad

I have seen senior citizens use their bumpers quite liberally when parallel parking. They grew up in the day when the bumper was a solid chunk of steel clad in rubber. They were probably taught to park that way. "Back up until you bump, pull ahead until you bump, straighten it out, and you're done!"

Lessoned learned... if i ever witness anyone bumping into my car, or smacking a door into it... there will be words.

Anyone hits me -- i call the cops i dont care how small it is. You ding my door -- I'm getting your plate and insurance info or I call the cops.

People are so inconsiderate - i know everyone says "respect" elders, but its a two way street. Just because you are 65 years old doesnt mean you can **** with a 16 year old's car and get away with it. I will be nice to old people as long as they don't try any weird ****. I'm like you man - I'm shy and hate to cause waves, but **** with my car and I turn into the hulk.

When I bought my 8 I got the extended warranty up to 80k. I received some card for like 30 free oil changes, and like 5 paintless dent repairs. <shrug> Ask if you have the platinum option on your warranty they will fix the dent for free.

All I can say is.. when it comes to something your paying for (I hope you are no offence) that entire syndrom of nonconfrontation'ism lol goes straight out the window, if it doesnt then there is something wrong with you. Go to the Manager and ask to atleast view the tape if he/she is nice they may let you. If not well just file a claim with your insurance and hope it isnt gonna cost you a arm and a leg to fix. Well hopefully next time with this experince you'll realize its worth making a huge *** scene 'cause sadly you're paying for it if you dont

You need to call the cops if you want their insurance to pay for it. There must be a police report so you can prove it wasn't your fault. Just getting a plate number and driver info doesn't prove anything. The insurance company has no way of proving who's fault it was, so you'll end up paying out on your insurance. A police report is the only way to prove who's fault it was. That's why whenever I'm in an accident and there is damage, I always call the police.

I wouldn't bother putting a claim in tho - it's not likely to cost much more than the deductible to fix. Get an estimate at a body shop b4 you do any claim w/your ins. company.

This sort of thing always poses a dilemma for me. First off, if I wasn't a car nut and thought of my car as an appliance—like 90% of Americans do—I wouldn't really care if someone tapped my bumper or dinged my door. But…I AM a car nut, and I'm **** about my car, which I bend over backwards to keep as close to perfect as possible.

So… when a seemingly "nice" non-******* person nudges my bumper or opens their door into mine, I'm torn. Do I let it go 'cause this is real life and these sort of little things happen? Or do I say I'm sorry, you just put a ding in my door, let me call the police which, I know, makes me seem like an ******* for what's thought to be "nothing" to the average person. I use to let it go, but the pain and inconvenience and expense of having it fixed would make me angry (later), so now I call the police (who will also undoubtedly roll their eyes because, let's face it, they have bigger problems to deal with than my door ding that they can't see—oh wait, ok, yeah I see it).

It sucks, though. If only people (even "nice" people) were more considerate and realized that some of us really LOVE our cars. Hey, I'm careful to not touch your car and I guess I expect the same in return.

(BTW, I don't think of this as especially an "old person" issue—it's most of the population.)

It depends on where you live, but the police don't need to be involved right away. Some jurisdictions have a reporting centre where you show up to report the damage, and the police file a report. There are some incidences in which you have to call the police right away (related to the sort of accident, or the amount of damage incurred). Your insurance company knows this - and they will tell you what to do if you don't know.

Sorry to hear that.

I'm glad it's only a little thing. But that little thing is a BIG issue.
