Interesting. A few points;

Can you imagine the size of the list of cars and trucks that are lighter than your Evo?

These are manufacturer listed curb weights, most not based in reality.

A fairer comparison that would have REALLY shrunk your list; find me rear wheel drive 4 seaters that are lighter than the 8.

You really are a stats jockey.

^^^^Ike, why is your list sooooooo short?

Just for comparison sake here's a few number that I think compare more directly: Nissan 350Z 3339lbs, Infiniti G35 3505lbs, BMW 3 series 3560, Mitsu EVO 3219. All in all the RX8 holds its own when it comes to weight. All the vehicles mentioned are RWD or AWD.

There are no RWD or AWD 4-seaters sold in the US that are lighter than the RX-8. Believe me, I've checked. In fact, there are no decently affordable RWD or AWD cars with a solid roof that is lighter than the RX-8 sold in the US. Also, I'm aware taking weight off the car is a difficult proposition. I plan to just reduce the unsprung weight by about 40 pounds and call it a day, maybe save another few pounds with a seat or catback. However, I don't have and can't justify throwing money at the car just to make it that much lighter.

By the way Ike, isn't this method sort of inflating the list?

The car is plenty light enough in the twisties. Downshifting the car on a sweeper of an expressway onramp will not leave you begging for less weight as you try to wipe the silly *** grin off your face. It could use a stiffer suspension though.

The illusion of too much weight only hits you when you're stoplight dragracing. The car doesn't need less weight, it needs ... more torque! Sorry, someone had to say it!

The only RWD 4-seater sports car I can think of that comes close to the weight of an RX-8 is a 911. Even with backseat accomodations bordering on usless compared to an RX-8, two less doors, and no driveshaft, the 911 still weighs more. Granted, it also produces about 100 more horsepower, but if you figure you could get three RX-8s for the price of a 911, that's roughly 705 HP vs 325 (fuzzy and illogical math, I know).

P.S. - Wider is not better. Please don't call the Pontiac Grand Am a "sports car".

Take it on a nice twisty mountain road with plenty of switchbacks and you'll wish you had less weight. When the road turns twisty, there's no substitute for lightweight.

If the 8 was around 1250-1300 kg, that I would call it light in comparison with other sportscar and the lack of torque wouldn't be that much of an issue anymore.

Look, someone made the statement that the RX-8 was the lightest 4 seater, which isn't true by any stretch of the imagination. I copied and pasted that list to show those that asked which cars are lighter, nothing more nothing less. I find the list rather interesting, I wish I could find one that went back 10 or so years.

You really are a moron. Do you think manufacturers just pull those numbers out of a hat? Well, maybe Mazda does, right after they've pulled the horsepower number their going to rate a car at out of said hat.

Yes, it would be a bigger list of cars that were lighter than my Evo, thank you for pointing that out Einstein. You want your "fair comparison" then go make it, why don't you just reduce the criteria to cars with rotary engines. I think you could probably swing that list, or you could lick my sweaty *****. Your call!

Sweet man you used to have a GC chassis subby? I really wanted to get one and do an ej255 swap or something but in reality.. it's nice to get a car thats already put together . The 8 only weighs like 200 lbs more than your last car though right (or did i f' the numbers in my head up again)? Anyways.. You can drop like 30 pounds off a spot in front and far above the front axle by getting a new battery. Also you can definatly free up some rotational inertia by getting some light 17's on it and maybe a new flywheel. Other than that I'd have to say it would be difficult to REALLY put the 8 on a diet. I mean it comes with friggen goop for a flat, lol.

The GC8 was okay, but very far from the SE3P in terms of driving enjoyment. The engine was certainly nothing to write home about, for me it just redlined way too low, and though the handling was quite predictable, the brakes were horrible and the shifter quite diabolical.

Actually, the bare bones model is about at 2,900, which puts it right about 1300 kg. Der.

Otherwise, being called a moron from a guy who runs up thousands of posts on a site of a car he constantly criticizes is oddly amusing. Kinda like your sweaty ***** problem.

Boxers maybe?
I don't comlain about this site, I love this site and many of the people on it. It's you and your fanboi brigade that I don't like.

As for the c-pillar, look at the Rx-7 (SA/FB, 1st-gen) and it'll all be clear..

Welcome to the rotary madness.. there is no cure. Well, maybe a quad-cam italian-made twelve-banger, but that's a touch extreme, money-wise...

I'm into day three of my new RX8 euphoria. And here's a little secret for appreciating ALL that the RX8 has to offer. Drive a Jeep Wrangler with 33" tires for six years before buying your 8. The fuel economy of the 8 is absolutely wonderful by comparison!

the rx-8 was also a step up MPG-wise for me as well. probably not as big a step as yours.
