Unhappy first ticket!

Well I got my first speeding ticket in like 7 years. 80 in a 65. 15 over not too bad. I wasn't being a jackass just going with the flow of traffic there was even some little red neon in front of me going faster than I was. 185 dollars is the fine. which i dont care about i am worried about my clean license and my insurance. I live in Maine but have a NY license cause i am in the military. the cop saw my military id and said i dont want that before i even gave it to him. i dont know if i should get a lawyer or if they will take it easy on me if I contest it and go to court cause my license is clean. what do u guys think? just pisses me off that i get picked out of a bunch cause i have a shiny red sports car.

Well i'm not sure about what they will do possibly give you a break if you go to court but if he already wrote u the citation then it's written and (at least in PA you had to plead guilty and pay or not guilty and they would send u a letter of when your court date, just move to fl and don't know about down here) U think your red 8 is bad? Try driving a yellow!!!! haha jk sux though man hope everything goes well

if you really want to plead your case, I don't know the term you use in court, but you should be able to plead guilty and address the court. You can present your argument then about the flow of traffic, and the fact that some one was going faster than you. Don't know if it will really help your case, cause either way, you were breaking the law, and thats probably how the judge will see it. If you do address the court, remember to keep your bearing, and be humble. Disrespect in a place like that will hurt more than anything.

Always go to court for tickets. I've gotten out of every one just by showing up, neatly dressed/groomed, and being very courteous.

Yep, red sports cars always catch the attention. I once asked a cop essentially 'why me' and he responded that it was the easiest one to visually pick out in a line of cars going the same speed. Just the way it is.

Days gone by I would hand over my military ID as well (a lot of State Police in MA were former Marines back then), but now you run into more and more anti-military types.

Well if u live in maine u know the naany state is broke- I was informed by a friend who owns a portable toilet business that they(police) are ticketing for even going over 5 miles per hr.Cop must have been a liberal no compassion for the great service u do for your country. They spend millions on the social programs here -I work at the state psych hosp and u would not believe the money that is spent on these supposed mental patients. They get i-pods,psp's computers and wii's not to mention everything else they get. I work forensics and most of the pts are sociopaths who do not want to do time in jail and refuse tx. Though meds do not work on these type of people. Welcome to socialism soon we will be just like my birth country of Canada-seen the gradual change since coming here in 98

it really doesnt matter if you are in the military or not. why should the military get special service if they break the rules like everyone else? sorry, if i were a copper i wouldnt give special breaks to anyone, i dont care if you have a imablondepornstar id or a military id, it should be all the same. anyone driving 3000lbs of metal, plastic, and rubber down the highway is capable of creating some serious damage.

anyway... always go to court.

yeah inmy days of testing speed with other cars on closed tracks haha I was told to always go to court for any ticket even speeding. BUt in PA if you wanted to go to court you signed "not guilty" on the back of the ticket and sent it to harrisburg(state capital) if not sign guilty and put in a check for the amount of the ticket and send it to the same place! Correct me if I am wrong though anyone from pa...

you dont need a lawyer to go to traffic court. but lawyers are usually $150-300/hour.

Take it to court, plea guilty and explain the situation. With a clean record most judges will let you off for a first time offense.

If they let off first time offenders then how can there ever be a second time offender?

Pleading guilty with and explanation often does get you a reduced fine in some places. Or at least it did in the past. But in small towns you may also find the judge is the cop's brother in law in which case you are screwed.

Does Maine have a defensive driving course that they offer in lieu of getting points on your record. First time offender....you shouldnt have any problem getting that, and just pay the ticket. Your insurance won't go up that much if any, especially if you take that course and tell them.

I'm in a hurry to read the posts here, but you should contest the ticket. They will set a hearing and sometimes the prosecutor doesn't even have info on the ticket, so it could be dropped. If not ask him for a continuance for dismissal (or whatever their equivalent is) and the ticket will be dropped in 90 days if you do not commit an offense. You can also ask to have it moved to a "non-moving" violation which will not go onto your insurance. If you want an attorney to help you, it will be about $300 on time fee (that's what we generally charge here at least).

Best to cop it sweet and put it behind you. The chances of more to come in the years ahead are high....just be more mindful of your speed.

Hmmm... In pure liberal principal I would have to agree, but the real answer is because we who served did a bit more to defend and support this republic than those who have not. My military brethren and I don't expect special treatment, but the acknowledgement of our service by the occasional 'favor' of this type when it's a relatively benign transgression is appreciated none the less.

Go to court, get the ticket reduced to minimum fine, and smile about all the other times you didn't get a ticket and probably should have.
