First trip in 8 to Hemet Lake
I just had my first camping trip with my church in the 8 to Hemet Lake, near Riverside, CA, and had my first chance to tackle some mountain curves. The experience was amazing!! I had two passengers and luggage and the 8 powered around curves like nothing!
It's also surprising how many drivers on the mountain like to have fun too. I came up behind a previous generation 4x4 Toyota Tacoma, and to my surprise he started to drive aggressively. He tackled curves surprisingly fast (i followed him around curves at around 60% of the 8's handling capacity). We came up behind a late 90's Ford Ranger and he started to go at it too! When passing lane came up the Tacoma and I passed the Ranger (on a tight s curve!!), but the Tacoma drove well enough so that I couldn't pass him easily. After a little more we went our separate ways and gave respective nods to each other.
One thing I learned about the mountain driving experience, going uphill was more fun than going downhill. Downhill is just too scary!! Too easy to go fast, and handling didn't feel as secure (probably due to forward-shifted weight from braking). When going uphill you can really enjoy the sound of the engine and the reassuring handling (lightly applying throttle for neutral balance).
Oh, and uh.. camping was fun too ... Pics of campsite and lake are attached. Oh, and yes, that is my 8 in the first pic.
