My thoughts: If the guy is capable of backing into a guardrail, he's perfectly capable of backing into your car as well. Sure, maybe MOST of the damage to his came from the guardrail, and he may not be lying about hitting it.

I wouldn't park in that location either. Maybe you could get him to trade spots with you. If he's hesitant, he's guilty!!!!!!

I don't think the car pictured has anything to do with it. I'm thinking about the angle required to get that dent, the force, and the nature of the scratches on his car.

I mean, I could be wrong, but I certainly don't think there is enough evidence there to go all out on this guy at all.
Not all of the white scratch part is paint that has come off from the culprit car onto my car. Its mostly road dust that got rubbed across. There are two distinct paint transfers (Each 0.5" thick). I agree this sort clears the toyota guy (he has 1 paint scratch).

I'm in no way knowledgeable in collisions, but it also looks like whatever hit you was traveling from back to front on your car. Like a partial sideswipe. Granted it doesn't carry into the door. Maybe they stopped before it got that far? Dunno... Good luck!

Don't let it go. That's not going to be cheap!

I've had several hit'n'runs on previous cars and it is extremely annoying. Best of luck!

Just take the paint sample without telling him. I don't know where you get paint analyzed but RX8's are rare. If it's Mazda velocity red paint, then you got him.

I just got an idea. The velocity red has gold flakes (or some kind of metallic flakes) in it. Seems like a chem lab should be able to find that.

This is your only shot. I'd do it.

Last summer someone hit my 8 and took off. I was parked at the side of the road. I was inside my building at work. when I went outside for break .... The workers told me it was a mack truck . I couldn't find the culprit. Paid out of my pocket.

Best of luck !!!

I hear you on being frustrated. Less then 3 weeks after I bought my 8 I went on a military training exercise for about 10 days. While I was gone my wife decided to drive my new car to a Parent Conference meeting at my kids school. When she came out there was a lady standing there next to the car and a huge dent on the passenger side.

The lady that hit the car didn't speak English but her husband does and he is Military Police. He was already there and another MP was filling out the accident report.

At least she didn't hit and run but it was frustrating to have my new car hit. I saw it before it got fixed when I came out of my training exercise to get parts for one of our military systems.. I wanted to blame my wife... How could I blame her for wanting to drive the RX8

Thank God they were insured and she stuck around. Being her husband was an MP, she knew better.

Good luck getting whoever slammed your 8.

dude, i'm no detective, but it's pretty obvious who hit you.

Hit and run if i'm not mistaken. Time to get your insurance company involved.

i am wondering how the insurance company can help - I will talk to them. I am wondering if I just report the incident and not make a claim, will my rates still rise?

I got an estimate from a "reputable" repair shop and they said $1080 and my deductible is $1000 (how convenient )

Going to head over to dent wizard and see what they say.

Your insurance wont go up unless they pay for it. I would call them, and explain the situation. They have their own "detective" type people who will want to look at your car and the other guys car.

Are you sure your comprehensive deductible is that high? I would lower that for sure. It doesn't make your premium jump that much. My comp deductible is 250, my collision deductible is 1k.

Get your insurance involved. This is what you pay them for.

If you're deductible is $1k, and the work will be not much more than that, you could get the work done, and then go after the culprit (if you find him) through small claims. Just a thought. That's if you don't want your insurance to go up.

Follow my advice. Call you insurance agent. Tell them what happened.

You pay them to work for you, have them work for you. If they determine this guy hit your car, they will go through the trouble of suing him and collecting and you dont even have to worry about it. Trust me, your insurance company wont want to be out 1k+

Your insurance rates shouldn't rise from being the victim of a hit and run. I would also suggest lowering your comp deductible to 250.

Talked to the insurance company and they are unable to help until I can point to a culprit car. And I dont think I have the culprit yet.

Then I talked to the police to see if they could ask the landlord for a list of plates that are registered for that parking lot. Landlord understandably does not want to reveal plate information (privacy concerns) but they said they will give them out if the police ask for the info.

In any case, this is what I get from the moron at the police headquarters:
I explain that it happened in a private parking lot where only tenants can park and that there are around 12-16 cars. And all I need are the plates - I dont need tenant info or anything. I said I believe one of the tenants hit me given the circumstances (parked furthest away from street etc).

1) Police: I cannot give that information unless you know the car.
2) Me: Why would I ask for plate information from the landlord if I knew which car it was?
3) Police: It could have been a car that did not have permission to park there and then we are looking at any car in worcester city.
4) Me: It is very likely that it is one of the tenants and that they are not parking there anymore because they dont want to get caught. If it is indeed a tenant, and I notice that one car with xyz plate never parks there, then that car is prolly the culprit. If all the registered plates park there, then it was someone else who was not supposed to park there.
5) Police: Repeat step 1
6) Me: grrrrrrrrrrrrr
Repeat steps 5 and 6.

I'll just pay the police headquarters a visit and point out what kind of morons they are - at which point I'll get arrested for being hit by someone's car.

I also checked with paint labs and they can compare samples that will hold up in court (bit pricey $150 per sample - so $300 - one off my car and one of suspect car). But I will do it if I am very damn sure I have the culprit and sue their *** in court.

If talking with the police does not work out - I will place an ad in the papers about anybody seeing any car with damage like that or anybody who changed a bumper or something. Then wait some more.

Man, now I almost feel guilty for going so far and not just letting it slide.

do you have uninsured underinsured motorist coverage.. that pays out in hit and run, and it won't make your (collision) policy go up. It also generally has no deductible. They'll fix it and then if you do find out who did it they'll sue him ( subrogation ).

May I ask what insurance company you are using?

This is how it should work.

Car gets hit by hit and run driver. Call insurance, tell them, make a claim, pay comp deductible. Insurance company asks for info on where your car was, police report number, any possible suspects etc. Your car gets fixed. Your insurance CO. goes out and finds who hit you, sues them recoups their $$$ and pays you back your deductible.

Now, perhaps they dont care because you deducitible is the same amount as your damage, which hurts your cause, but I would still expect more from my ins. co.

The state of massachusetts decides what kind of coverage people can have and those are not options. There is only coverage for "Bodily Injury" because of uninsured / under-insured motorist. Unfortunately thats my body, not the car's.

May I ask what insurance company you are using?
Its Amica. I cant really blame them for not being able to pursue this case further. If only I could find the car. They did say they will pursue the case if I can find the car.

and heres another option that might be saving me some money:
http://www.assabetafterdark.com/4dcg...lassDetail.htm

Its a do-it-yourself course at a vocational school where you work on your own cars - fix dents, paint and color match etc. Everything for $400.

I took a course with them on auto maintenance - things like oil changes, brake repair, engine maintenance etc. and loved working on my car.

Ya, that school would be good, but I don't know if they can help you fix a dent the size of the state you're in.

I have taken all pictures and paint samples off my car.

Please advise.

Note that the culprit car fender (where it hit doesnt look bright red because my paint did not rub off onto his car - however it appears pink to the eye - the pic is not that great when showing pink)

I was hit and run at my Apartments last year. A black SUV smashed into the back of my 8 over $5,000 in damage. I got home from working out late around 12.am. Got up at 5.am to go to work when I see ma RX-8 all smashed up. A black SUV backed into the back of my RX-8 dead center!. Black paint was rubbed all over my Car and I glued there tail light back together. It was BIG. I did a police report right when they opened at 9.am, called my Car INC right when I seen my Car at 5.am. They got it fixed but I had to pay a $1,000 deductible at that time . Good part was my Car INC did not go up.

I hope that things work out for you because that's going to be a very expensive repair. The rear door is aluminum and won't be reparable after getting a dent that bad. You will have to have a new door and paint work on the side of the car because you must blend that red.
