Found a new use for my trunk

After being surprised by how hot my trunk would get in my short drive back from the grocery store (helpful for softening ice cream!), I did an experiment on a long highway trip. I put a thermometer in the trunk, and here are the results:
Trunk temp remained fairly steady at 95deg on the highway. Plus or minus one degree, it maintained this temperature in outside temps ranging from 75 to 100deg.
Looks like we can add this to the list of cool things about the RX-8, a temperature regulated trunk! As the outside temps dip below freezing, I'll have to do another round of tests to see if this remains true at lower temperatures.
*disclaimer*
The airflow around the exhaust system and the trunk is probably responsible for the relatively low temperatures, as it SEEMS to be hotter in local driving where there's likely more heat soak when stopped or at very low speeds. I presume Mazda has designed some thermostatically-regulated, automatically-deploying "flaps" in the underbody and exhaust system to maintain the trunk temperature (or possibly a special radiator in the area behind the fender vents!), but they are less efficient at low speeds.

Well, I love my (2004) cup holder, particularly now when winter is around the corner.
Imagine, how much more coffee fits into your mug since there is no need for bulky insulation to keep it warm.

I like my thermal cup holder.
Every morning I take a cup of piping hot coffee with me from home. I manage to drink about half of it before I get to the gym. By the time I get done working out, my coffee is still warm enough to drink. Not piping hot, but definitely drinkable.
