I put a deposit on this car last Friday while waiting for some funds to come through this week. Just received my direct deposit and am going to pick up our "new to us" 05 RX-8 WWP Touring this Friday. We are very excited. In December, this car will be my daughter's ride. We're so glad she will have 6 months or so to get used to driving it before taking it off on her own. We would never dream of handing over the keys to such a machine to our son when he turns 16 but we are comfortable with her maturity and driving responsibility. For at least the next couple of years, it will be up to dear old Dad to blow out the carbon now and then and make sure she stays full of oil (and probably gas too ) on a regular basis.

I appreciate the information I've received and found on this forum so far. It has been very helpful and has made me feel much more comfortable about this purchase. I'm looking forward to learning more and participating on this forum.

Manual?

 

No, automatic. A rear spoiler and automatic transmission were mandated requirements by my daughter. And, with this car, I think a tamed down a/t version is probably a good call for her anyway.

Apparently, the ability, or lack thereof, to ever learn to drive a manual properly is a genetic trait. And, unfortunately for my daughter, she picked it up from her mother. If it were for me, having a car like this without a stick, just wouldn't be as much fun.

I read a consumer review about the '8 when considering this. It described the manual and auto versions as totally different cars. That's not such a bad thing in our case. Still a beautiful, unique car that is fun to drive.

She must be very mature for you to put her in such a hot car and you don't have to worry about the prerequisite showboating that you have to do when you first get your license.

We don't usually get the parents side of a 16 year old whose parents bought them an RX-8... most of those threads are dripping with fail.

Oh and the 8 is very safe so don't worry about that.

An A/T is a perfect choice. Still has the great handling but the speed of an average compact car.

Silver was her first choice of colors actually. Both of our other vehicles are silver and so we like it to. But we couldn't find a low mileage silver '8 anywhere near here that matched the bang for the buck we are getting with this WWP.

I know some may just be joking around but I don't think it's fair for some people to assume I'm giving my daughter a suicide machine that I'm going to regret later, when you don't know me or her. As I said at the beginning of this thread, I wouldn't hand this thing over to my son when he turns 16, because I know him and I know it would be an irresponsible act on my part. But I also know my daughter. I've seen her drive and I see how she carries herself. She's not the type to showboat or follow the crowd. Her two favorite things about this car are: 1 - we live in a fairly small town and absolutely nobody in her age group has a car like this (she likes to be unique, but not from a showoff perspective, she doesn't want to be seen as a copycat or a showoff), 2 - the windows are tinted enough that people can't see her in it (I don't know many showoffs that would consider that a positive thing). Bottom line, if I'm comfortable with it, that's what matters.

All I got was a free, hand me down 1990 Plymouth acclaim that wasn't even my parents car. They allowed my sisters boyfriend (now husband) to give it to me...

Why would my son be pissed - he's only 11? He has had 2 new dirtbikes in the last year and a half and has access to a jacked up golf cart and an ATV to ride around on. He's actually excited for his sister and is looking forward to riding in it.

I guess you can call my kids spoiled in certain respects, if you want to. My parents always did what they could for my brother and me growing up and it wasn't anywhere near this sort of thing but I knew it was all they could do. Fortunately, I'm able to do more for mine and I'm thankful for that and so are my parents. For my 16th birthday, I got a brand new keychain with a duplicate ignition key to my mom's Buick. And i was glad to have it.

I feel like I'm getting a very good deal on this car. That's why I am buying it so far in advance of her 16th birthday. I would have spent near or even as much on a "box" with wheels for her that I felt was decent for her to drive so why not get something she really likes and will enjoy?

 

Ah silver is actually cursed haha!!! j/k...car looks good....but u better go blow some carbon out of it so it's in tip top shape for her to drive ....

Oh and captain eggs I have had this car for over 2 years and I still have that same big *** smile on my face....my friends are used to it by now haha...i don't think it will ever go away...unless I have to sell it or something(but then i'll either be buying an FD or another 8 or something rotary)
