Friend's opinion on my 8
#53
Your civic-owning friend is obviously an automotive God. You must believe everything he says without question. Ye shall bow down before him and worship his every word. He is all knowing and all seeing. Nothing you read here or on any printed page can compare to his holy words. Trust in him and he shall lead you on the path to automotive rightousness.

early 90's civic hatchbacks cost about 2-3 grand, not a little under 20k..
with 10 grand TOTAL you could swap build and boost a b series motor in an EG that would absolutely maul the rx8 in every aspect of performance. not to mention VX trims weigh in at 2100 pounds stock and with some mods can be taken under 2,000 pounds. pair that with a boosted b series generating 350whp and you're talking about a very serious "festival of horsepower" because you're talking about a car making twice the rx8's power in a car that weighs a 1,000 lbs less than the RX-8.
i dont know where you're pulling a 30 grand figure from but with that kind of money you can build a civic running 10's. last time i checked the rx8 has trouble getting the better of 15.

I get picked on a lot for having an auto but not for driving rx-8.
They usually talk about how they will speed through every corner they encounter if they had rx-8... and I am a bad friend who doesn't even let them try... heh

Off topic: The best Civic EVER was the 1994 Civic EX. I don't know when they changed to the softer, kinder, and frumpier Civic, but that one boogied, had great interior/exterior styling, handled quite well, and was mechanically bulletproof.
On topic: The real test of your friend's sincerity in the statements he made is whether he would be willing to swap his car for yours. :D

And by doing all that crapola to some tired old Civic, at the end of the day, you'll have a flogged and shredded car worth $500 that is a carrying case for $10,000 in slightly used performance parts.
Sounds like a tremendous display of intelligence to me.

I'm the opposite. Everytime I pass one of those souped up econoboxes, I can't help but to think to myself that if they could have saved up the money spent on all that bling and bought a better car.

For the record, early Honda Civic hatchbacks were the ones in the 70s. The ones in the 90s were all at least $12,000 or more.
A 1994 Civic EX 5 speed was about $15,800 in 1994, or not far off of MSRP. They were very much in demand.

Friend typing: apologize if I offended someone, I'm just saying for the price that she paid, i could've made my car as fast as her rx8. Just my .02, I chose a civic 'coz it's cheap and its fun to build. Not comparing my car to her's 'coz i know that's crazy. I even asked her if I could drive it but she says I'm not worthy.... hehehehe

so i guess my point it is, sometimes, people have pretty good reasons as to why they get cars like that, and spend all this money on it, when they could just buy a better car from the start.

I think its important to note, that you shouldn't turn one crappy owner into a bashing fest for the particular car they drive. (Talking about the civic guy being an *** here).
The older style civic hatch backs are unbelievable both in their original configuration, and their potential. As ethusiasts, its important to know that newer cars are not necessarily representative of the heritage and previous history of the vehicle..
Always remember this. Do not estimate a car because a large % of owners are into bling bling and giant wings. The day you under estimate one, is the day a completely stock looking 94 hatch blows you out of the water with its 600 dollar b18b engine, and 400 dollars in suspension mods.
The old civics have double wishbone front and rear, extremely inexpensive parts (600 for a low mileage engine), and incredible power to weight ratios. They are still reknown for one of the best platforms (especially from a price standpoint) for autox and track competition. They deserve the greatest respect from enthusiasts, both new and old alike.
The last thing you want the 8 to be is the car that compares itself to everybody else just for the sake of trying to see whose got the bigger *****. Someone doesn't like your car? Its life. You know how good your car is. If you don't know how good your car is, learn. There are tons of available advanced driving courses and events across the world. Many of these are relatively inexpensive for what you get, and the lessons you'll learn will stay with you for the rest of your life, regardless of the vehicle you drive.
You'll also learn a respect for cars you don't think have a prayer of competiting against something like a GT3 or Ferrari 360CS...but do so in stride, and without egotistical dick waving.

At the end of the day, your car will still be a shitbox Civic that looks like every other car at the trainstation and my RX-8 will still get people walking up to it to take a look at it in a parking lot, and will still out handle and out-road-course any Civic ever made.

the purpose of putting 10 grand in a civic is not to "be better than an rx8" the rx8 isnt even a competitive nor respectable sports car. well tuned civics could put an rx8 to shame on an rx8, CRX's and EG6's can handle much better than the rx8 with proper mods and weigh a significant amount less which makes the largest impact on a track car by far. a good suspension geometry and setup paired with sub 2000 pounds makes a much better track car than an RX-8. also your rx8 doesn't look like a ferrari, no one cares there's a million of them. you could say that if you got one of the first in july of 03 and owned it through about mid 04 but the car is just like any other now. if you're truely intrested in performance vehicles and keep in mind i said "performance" and only "performance" the rx8 is not that kind of car. tuners who spend serious money on modding their civic can make pretty serious machines. the sad thing about it is 99% of civic owners who "modify" their cars are not well informed tuners and just buy bolt ons or ricers. by the way i don't own a civic and never plan on owning one, im just informing you and hopefully trying to open your mind to other respectable cars.
