The older style civic hatch backs are unbelievable both in their original configuration, and their potential. As ethusiasts, its important to know that newer cars are not necessarily representative of the heritage and previous history of the vehicle..
Always remember this. Do not estimate a car because a large % of owners are into bling bling and giant wings. The day you under estimate one, is the day a completely stock looking 94 hatch blows you out of the water with its 600 dollar b18b engine, and 400 dollars in suspension mods.
The old civics have double wishbone front and rear, extremely inexpensive parts (600 for a low mileage engine), and incredible power to weight ratios. They are still reknown for one of the best platforms (especially from a price standpoint) for autox and track competition. They deserve the greatest respect from enthusiasts, both new and old alike.
The last thing you want the 8 to be is the car that compares itself to everybody else just for the sake of trying to see whose got the bigger *****. Someone doesn't like your car? Its life. You know how good your car is. If you don't know how good your car is, learn. There are tons of available advanced driving courses and events across the world. Many of these are relatively inexpensive for what you get, and the lessons you'll learn will stay with you for the rest of your life, regardless of the vehicle you drive.
You'll also learn a respect for cars you don't think have a prayer of competiting against something like a GT3 or Ferrari 360CS...but do so in stride, and without egotistical dick waving.

I do agree that it's getting pretty old. Some people are tuners, let them tune their $5000 car into a giant slayer, more power to em. Civics are great little cars to sit around and tinker with, the fact that they're cheap to upgrade only furthers their appeal.
Sure, it might seem like a waste of money to throw $20 grand at a $5000 car, but to them, the sense of accomplishment when they beat your $30k+ car with the car that they built all by themselves is completely worth it.

Guys, you have completely missed the point. This isn't and never was about how good a Civic is or how good an idea expensive mods to it are or any of that. What this was about was that her friend was acting like a jerk. It doesn't MATTER whether he was right or wrong, he was acting like a JERK.

Aye thats true...but then the thread turned into civic bashing instead of bashing the nut behind the wheel.
I'd say you can turn an EX 94 hatchback into a giant killer for about 2k. If you wanna kill them at the strip, it'll cost more, but it doesn't take much money at all to get an old hatch to beat the living crap out of people at DE's.
Trust me, I have been greatly humbled myself. Nothing like seeing a little lime green hatch upset because the GT3 won't give them the pass. I wish the US required everyone attend advanced driver training courses. Eye opening doesn't begin to describe the amount of things you learn. Changes your perspective on everything automotive.
Noob: "Hahaha that celicia is the slowz0r!!!! Haha he should go home, he'll just start a train"
Regular: "Just wait"
5 laps later.
Noob: "Did the celica just lap the 350Z?"
Regular: Yes.
Noob: "wow"

For what it's worth, and please folks trust me that I could really give a crap either way, I've just never understood the whole "tuner"/"hot rod" concept. Call me goofy, but back when I was a kid and a guy would buy some half-rusted Chevelle (and not the good years) and spend hundreds (then) on a new "rat motor" and suspension and rear end mods just to have a loud, somewhat fast, still rusty Chevelle, never made sense to me. If you're restoring or modding a car, at least do it to something that will hold onto the value.
Same goes for now. A '95 Civic is still a '95 Civic regardless of the $10,000 in crap you put into it to make it turn some mythical 1/4 mile number.
Folks, cars are depreciating assets. They start evaporating wealth the moment you take possession of them. I haven't owned a car in more than 18 years - I always lease them because I don't believe in owning depreciating assets. But that's just me.
And to put this back on topic, the person's friend is an idiot and it typical of the dipshits that typically own Civics these days. I saw a kid today at a light - he had a Civic DX with an automatic, a fart cannon, lowered suspension, a-pillar gauge kit and a shift light - BUT ON AN AUTOMATIC (and folks, it's so easy to tell an auto just by the sound emmitted by the fart cannon). Absolutely typical Civic dork. A $3000 car with $7500 in mods. Great use of money.
I'm not an uniformed, ignorant car person. I just don't get today's "car culture".

i understand where you're coming from now a lot better.
and i have to strongly agree that that individual you encountered today is probably the most accurate description of the "ricer" and the typical "modified civic" what a waste of time and money. too bad, if he had an IQ of at least 100 he could have spent that 3 grand and smoked you in your 30,000 dollar car.

indeed people sometimes use the suffix "****" in a context other than it's actual meaning, simular to how america's youth is now big into saying "gay" in a reference to something that is "uncool" or not to thier liking. Here on the rx8club.com message boards people sometimes choose to apply that suffix to their words to indicate an unjust hatred or disliking to the subject(usually being directed at an individual) i.e.

Stew - don't worry, I'm from the age-group that's most burdened with the whole "tuner" culture stigma and I also really don't understand throwing so much money at a car when you could simply buy a nicer car. Now, if you're building a racecar, then things are much different, but throwing out a ton of money to make a piece of crap a fast piece of crap is a total waste. You could simply buy something nice instead of clearing the shelves at your local Pep Boys. It is going to be your daily driver, after all, might as well make it something that's comfortable and practical.
Nothing against tuners in general, I just think money is better spent elsewhere.

you can drop $10,000 in a civic engine and run 1/4 mile under 10 seconds, a Rx8 can never do that, i suggest get the Evo, it is much better, handles better, much faster acceleration and better 1/4 mile than rx8. even the turbo charged rx8 can't beat the stock evo in anything. THey both are in the same price range too.

an Evo is probably the best performance car for the money and in my eyes(though a subaru enthusiast and a bigtime mitsu basher oddly enough) a car with much more potential, all of the modded evo vs sti shootouts always turn out the same. mostly due to the fact that subaru abandons its japanese drivetrain/engine layout where a lot of the performance products are developed obviously so you can't carry over a lot of the japanese performance products, but for the mitsubishi its the same deal so there's a lot more aftermarket available. in addition the STi is an understeering pig whoops didn't say that Ike.
subaru needs to scrap the gdb and bring back the allmighty GC8's and remake the Subaru Impreza WRX STi-V Type-R 20b for US sale

Whats the difference between spending 30k on a car, and being happy with it and spending 20k on a car and 10k in mods, and being happy with it.
Here's a hint. There isn't any difference.
For those that follow japanese tuning/styling of vehicles, it's quite common and culturally accepted to purchase a car, and spend the full car's value in modifications to it. In a world of lemmings, some individuals choose to stand out by using their cars as their canvas.

Not that I have any expectation that my words are going to change anyone's mind.

Stoplight drags are the stupidest sport known to man.
And by the way, I'm not a mod hater, I just don't see the point.

It's like the old joke where an ugly woman hears a man belch in a bar, and chastises him. He says to her "Ma'am, maybe I am uncouth, but I assure you, I could go to finishing school in the same way that you have, and then I could be refined like you. That said, it doesn't matter what you do, at the end of the day, you're still ugly."

Hey, sounds brilliant to me, where do I sign up ...
IF YOU READ MY POSTS (yes, I'm shouting now), you'll notice that everytime I make this comment, I say I just don't understand the financial sense in that expenditure. Most of these kids don't have that money to spend, so why waste it on a car?
Maybe I'm just too old for this place anymore ...
