Fuel Economy Difference
How come I have been reading that so many people are getting terrible miles per gallon on their RX8? The mazda site says the estimated fuel economy is 18/24. How come I have read that people are getting like 10, 11, etc? Are the mazda numbers that fair off from the real thing?

Stock RX-8 engines come equipped with a fuel optimizer that will position the ions within a fuel stream into a north and south direction to help boost combustion efficiency. There was a defect with the 8's optimizer with earlier builds. We're still waiting on a TSB to fix the optimizer, but until then, we have to suffer with lower than estimated fuel economy.

If you look in the lower left corner of the sticker, you will see Mazda's numbers. They are like 15 and 20 mpg. I am getting about 17 city, and 21-22 spirited hwy driving.
This car is so smooth I sometimes look down and I am run 5k rpm when I could have shifted to 5th or 6th. I wonder if some people just don't realize they are running higher rpm's than they think.

It's a physical component.
Newer builds will not need the fix. Although the older ones require the TSB, it isn't that big of a deal. I personally get around 18-19 MPG. Very few 8's even have the fix (latest builds). Even though I'm on the higher end of the spectrum, I do plan to have my car maintenanced once the TSB arrives.

But you're wrong, I think they said it optimized the spark current. It piggybacks your spark plug wires or something...
Odd though... haven't seen the commercials for awhile now...

And I get 18mpg so far, BTW, without the ionizer (aftermarket or otherwise).

Hey all,
I'm new to the forum. After reading around I just learned about Mazda's restating the RX8's horsepower...after I had purchased the vehicle. I bought the Vehicle August 30th. My window sticker says the vehicle has 247 HP...even though Mazda is saying it is really 238 HP. Should I contact my dealer about this for some form of reimbursement? When was the deadline to be elgible for Mazda's buyback or rebate? Thanks for the help guys!
And for the record, I would not sell my car back, but I could use the rebate. I love the car and its performance. I would just like the same treatment everyone else is receiving.

not my second post ever...my second reply in this thread. Within that second reply within this thread look at the second paragraph. In case anyone else is confused, look at THIS paragraph:
Ok forget it, first letter of every sentence spells "NAIVE".

Yes:
Can someone explain to me the details of the free maintenance offered by Mazda. You see, I purchased my vehicle on Aug. 30th, with an advertised 247 HP. In other words I bought what I thought was a 247 HP vehicle. I called mazda as suggested in another thread and they told me this was a dealer issue. They told me they would contact the dealership and have them settle this issue...not sure if they did or not. I asked the manager there and he said he never heard from them. Anyways, the manager is a nice guy and looked into the issue. He told me what mazda told me...that I didn't qualify for mazda's program because of the sale date, but that he would arrange to get me the same services from the dealership. So he cut me a $500 check and free routine maintenance oil changes and lubrication every 3,000 miles. Is this the same service offered from mazda?

A couple people commented that my maintenance program was actually better because I got a $500 check, instead of that retarded gift card with an expiration date.
