Fuel Pump Service Life

Would swapping out a fuel pump with 100k miles on it be wise preventative maintenance for an RX8? I haven't heard of too many fuel pump failures, but I faintly remember reading somewhere that Mazda recommends changing it out around 100k miles. I could also be completely wrong. I'm not sure if the fuel pump has the capacity to cause the engine to run lean and destroy things, so I'm considering all possibilities.

Wasn't there a fuel pump recall from Mazda issued a month or so ago? Not sure that would answer your specific question, but may delay the necessity of an authoritative answer.

The recall was on fuel pump housing, not the pump itself.
The early ones can be a liability, they got better with series 2. At 100k I would replace/upgrade preventatively, yes.

Any suggestions as far as an upgrade?

Series 2 pumps make a great series 1 upgrade for stock power levels.

So 100k is around the mark for replacing series 2 fuel pump?
I’m having a faceplant at 7k rpm on WOT. I’m gearing towards fuel pump since my car is at 100100 miles

Confirm it's the issue. There are other expensive reasons for high rpm power loss, like the catalytic converter.

I can speak from personal experience, if you have any signs of a pump going bad and I mean ANY get a new pump. You don’t want to overthink or do what I did… and just put it off. When she goes she goes and then you gotta change the pump in a parking lot lol. My car had 118k on it not sure if it was original but needless to say, the more you keep a calendared schedule with changing what’s necessary the more you don’t have to worry about things going wrong. I was in a jam with getting the car fixed right away so I just bit the bullet and got a New Delphi pump from autozone. The only downside to the pump was I had a wire that needed to be soldered and it does put off a bit of a noise. Honestly though if you have an hks high power you won’t hear a thing lol
