fule detector broken 450 $ to fix???
Hi. I have a 2004 rx8. Roughly about half 10 monthes ago, the check engine light came on, so i took it to a dealer. Then they told me is that because i didn't screw you my fuel cap right...( HEW??? were they serious? ) fine. Things went back to normal and they charged me 50 dollar. After a few days, the light came on again. I was like wth?
but i kept on driving and everything on the car functioned greatly like perfectly. so i figured its probably the fuel cap again.
for this reason, i didn't take it in. Then time went by. Until 4 days ago, i was feeling a bit stupid, so i went in with the issue on the engine light. ( yes the light stayed there for over 6 monthes)
Now, all of sudden, they want to charge me 450 to fix this fuel detector.
Got a few question then.
what is a fuel detector anyway? what is its function?
Isn't this supposed to be under warranty? (sounds more like a defect...lol)
is the price a bit too muche?
what should i do?

go to your local automotive store and ask them to read the CEL code out of your car. It needs to be a CAN ODB2 scanner.
then google the CEL code to find out what the car is reporting.
the seal on the gas cap is a common problem. After a while the rubber doesn't seal well and the car detects it, causing a CEL to appear. If you were still in warranty (10 months ago) when the dealer charged you $50 for the gas cap, I highly recommend finding another dealer.

Take the advice, head to Autozone or somewhere and have the code read for free. I think the dealer is trying to rip you off. We don't know this for sure, but there is one way to find out. If it does turn out to be the gas cap, then find another dealer.
