I have a 2005 with 12000 miles and am averaging 18. That includes several hundred miles of track time that only got 7 mpg.
I think most of the older horror stories will apply to 2004 models. It seems that 2005s generally get 17-18 in mixed driving.
I have gotten as bad as 15 mpg on one tank but I was driving in very bad slow traffic for the entire time. I have also gotten 21 on some highway trips.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD... SEARCH!!!!!! THERE HAS TO BE SEVERAL DOZEN GAS MILEAGE THREADS!!!!
You bought a sports car. You did NOT buy this car for fuel efficiency. If you bought this car for 30 mpg, you fucked up.

Someone should really make a sticky for gas milage that just says "For the love of god, please us the search function!!"
Not to be rude to the original poster, but I just typed in gas milage and came up with 31 threads you can draw your research from.

i've got a 2004, and my avg mpg is 18.351, mostly city driving.
also, a new engine will typically get worse gas mileage than it normally would until several thousand miles after its break-in is through. so, if you only have around 1000 miles on the engine, you are just barely through the breakin period. give it a few thousand more miles and the mileage will increase.
also, try taking up to 3k-3.5k before shifting. you might be shifting too soon, and having to give it more gas than you need to. try different things before giving up on the car. but i agree with the other posters...you apparently didnt' do your research before buying the car.

How does one shift an RX8 at 2500rpms? The car will hardly move at that rpm. People that responded have been duped once again. Welcome to Trolleville or Idiotville. Likely both.

Why so harsh?
I know that these gas mileage threads have beaten a dead horse, but I think that the point we should all get from this information from various owners is this...so far, there does not seem to be any rhyme or reason as to the differences that we see in mileage between our 8's.
We have some owners that average 20 with mixed driving. Some that average 12-15. I know when I have tried various methods of driving technique, after resetting the Ecc Shaft sensor(Brake Tap), or after a reflash, I still can't get better than 15 with mixed driving. I do think that that if one of these threads actually remained focused on finding some sort of consistency, then we could truly make a valuable sticky, and send new questions there. Otherwise, people will read that many get poor mileage, but no answer on why.
I personally am able to muster 26mpg on long trips, cruising between 70 and 90mph. This surprised the hell out me, when I do mixed and only get 15. 11mpg is pretty close to what a hummer gets, and that's the difference between mixed and hightway driving? Seems unusual to me, and something must be going on during city driving. My findings are all over the board, but maybe they will help sparks some brilliant mind out there that knows more about the technical, and mechanical aspects of the Renesis, or the ECU to help discern the best shift points, fuel type, etc for your car, or you location.
Mixed Driving/Highway Mileage by Fuel Type:
Cold Weather: Reg-14mpg/22mpg, while Mid/Premium got me 10/17.
Warm/Hot Weather: Reg- 9mpg/15mpg(engine pinging), Mid/Premium 15/24
Use Reg unleaded in cold weather, and midgrade or premium in warm weather seems to help.
Tune-Up Items:
New Air Filter after 18,000 miles increased the highest figures above increased by 1 or 2 mpg... Cold Weather 14/22 became 15/24, and Warm Weather 15/24 increased to 15.6/26.
I have not yet replaced spark plugs, or cleaned them, and I have no mods.
Finally, I do think that there is a common misconception when people look at new cars, and do not know that the EPA guide for mileage can be so far off. They may base their findings on previous car EPA mileage ratings.. for example, my mother's Lincoln LS V8 is listed as 18/24 by EPA, and she averages 22mpg mixed, and 25 highway. Sometimes the environment in which these engines are tested makes a big difference, and the results differ significantly in real life...and we see that with the 8. There is also the argument that some people make, "it's a sports car, what do you expect!", to that I say... a car of higher performance and similar price like the the Evo 8 or WRX STi both get EPA 18/26 and 18/24 and real life driving average is 21.7 and 20.1 respectively. The "it's a sports car" thing doesn't work for me. These cars are heavier, and turboed, make more power and torque with better efficiency. I'm still looking for the increase in effeiciency that Mazda boasted about regarding the new Renesis design....the 1995 RX-7TT was "rated" at 17/25 and developed the slightly more hp, and oil consumption for me is around a quart or more, per 3000 mile oil change.
So for those that gripe about power, don't flame those that gripe about fuel economy...and those that don't gripe at all, just don't say anything. I hope that Mazda will continue to improve the 04's with reflashes, and that the future iterations of the 8, perhaps RX-7, and MS version will be improved in all of these areas.

But yes, I would firmly agree that shifting at too low and rpm is asking for ppor economy and performance. I never understood drivers that would shift so soon after getting going....shifting at 2000 is to low for any high revving engine. I have found with my Miata, and most 4 cyclinders....3000rpm was the magic number for city driving.
In regards to my previous post, I do recognize the differences in mechaqnical operation and design of the rotary, but I think that there are too many variances.
For the original poster, shift at 3000-3400 at least. I think that without revving a little bit from time to time, performance may drop off from deposits, etc. Open it up a little, and use Midgrade gas.

I totally agree with the other members on all points. My other question is what is your cruising RPM? Like Elara said, at 2500 the engine is struggling (unless you drive downhill to work and home )
To add to RotaryIT's point on EPA mileage ... these are guesstimates on what people will be getting. Real life driving is different. I personally do lots of stop and go driving on my way to work (lots of idle time)... so I know that I can't realistically expect the same mileage as somebody who has a 30km commute to work on a highway.
A little bit unrelated but I have a friend with the Honda Hybrid Accord who is supposed to get great mileage (around 30) but he can only squeeze out 24 ... why? He does lots of stop and go driving like I do. funny thing is that he complains about 24 city whereas I would be overjoyed with 24 city

Just went back and read some of his other posts. Lil FJD 915 is either a troll, a liar, or both. Since you seem to think street racing is "keeping it under 2500 rpms" you're apparently not that bright either. And you're rude when called out on it. Keep it up, so I can ban you.

Just to get this back on topic...
I noticed something that I found rather interesting this weekend. I have wrecked my RX8, so I had to drive to AR in my ranger (4 cylinder) this weekend. I used 3 tanks of gas while I was gone. Surprisingly, I got 20-21 mpg on all 3 tanks... the SAME as I do in my RX8 on the same trip.
