I always use the middle one, 89 octane. No problem so far.

so people are suggesting 87 + premix + octane booster? why not just get the 91? all that probably costs you more per tank than just getting the correct gas does.

shhh ... now you are introducing math into the equation ... there goes half the thread.

Btw: fwiw, I just found out today that you can use your stop and shop points at most shell stations (sorry if i am tardy to that party)

because most people are stupid. they only care about short turn results rather than long term effects.
today you save $3 by putting low octane oil, then some weeks later paying $1000 to have the engine replaced.

I'm not defending either argument but here in NYC the price difference between 87 and 93 is something like 45 cents.. that's $6+ per tank.

Many have gone 89 in the colder months with no problem. At one point it was even said that the slightly lower octane would make a bit more power, but definitely not the popular opinion.

Worst price is oil isn't getting any more common, eventually the price will only go up :O

I mean, 91+ probably the "safest" gas to use.

but is it the best? maybe, maybe not.

too much variations.

Paimon,

You mentioned the Shell card and I was going to say something similar lol. I think it's WalMart that has some sort of deal that if you use a giftcard to purchase your gas you save .10/gal when you fill up, which is about the difference between the middle and high grade gas anyway. So if somebody wants to save some change just go buy a giftcard and use it as your gas card...simple way to save your car and money. I will NOT put the cheap stuff in, I love my car and I know you get out what you put it in..I have high expectations. High expectations=high octane. Sorry!

^^ Yea see I shop at stop and shop and they have the gas station here but god knows what kind of gas it is, and because i dont know if it is good or not I have just been hitting up the shell next door which is obviously far more expensive. The thing that sucked was i was like "i cant believe i am wasting all of these gas points". Granted my gf would use it (she just used some of the points this past week and got regular for 2.84), there was still points left over. I actually came across a guy the other day that was entering his stop and shop card number in the pump and i asked him wtf he was doing. I guess shell and stop and shop have partnered up across the country to cater to the people that dont have gas stations at their s&s's ... its worth taking a look. I ahve to fill this weekend, I am wondering how much I will end up paying instead of the 3.81 that I paid / gallon 2 wks ago lol.

This is yet another reason why rotaries won't be coming back.

My 04 rx8

I've used regular 87 octane since new in 04. I now have 48k on the car with no performance problems. I do live in a humid nothern climate(great lakes). maybe that is why. Give it a try and see what happens. You can always go back to premium if it does not work in your car.

This car at 8 years old is the most dependable car I've ever owned. I have put no money into it other than regular maintenance. It has been and exceptional car. When gas goes up I just drive less since I am a retiree.

Hey guys, I fill up with C16 once a week...I get pretty shitty gas mileage and I'm pretty certain my o2 sensor is f*cked, but it smells soo good.

My engine should be fine if I use this super high octane...right?

Oh, and seriously, if the $4.00 is killing you then maybe you should have bought a Corolla or Civic.
HAHAHA I had just sold my civic it got 39mpg highway and got my Rx8. The way I see it gas is going up either way an extra 40 bucks a week on gas to drive what I want and always wanted is not a big deal. If it gets to high buy a dang on road/off road dirtbike for those trips to work.

I think if you have a high sensitivity in your income towards the increasing gas prices, then you should buy the lower grade, however, if you think about it sensibly, the difference you're spending is really only 4-6 dollars (16-24 a month), and if you can't sacrifice that little for a tank of gas, then you should reconsider you're daily transportation. Not to be rude, or anything, but that difference is nominal. If you're making very little money per month, and that 24 dollars goes a long way, then yeah, you can switch. But if you're just wanting to switch to be safe, then...Eh, maybe it's worth a re-thinkin'
