General Questions

Good morning all,
I am new to the RX-8 family. Just picked my up on the weekend.
2005 RX-8. Couple of questions. I have been reading up on the oil type for this vehicle, I have read a number of posts saying the 5W30 is the way to go. I have spoken to 3 different dealerships and they all suggest 5W20. Thoughts here???
Second question is how long between oil changes. Dealarships are saying 8K, seems a little high in my opinion considering we are not using synthetic. Thoughts here as well.
Thanks.

I do castrol GT non synthetic 5w20 every 3k miles

There are a lot of different opinion on this. You probably should put on your flame suit because the people here tend to not take well to people who don't search

I use 5W20 every 2500 miles. Thats me though, a lot of people here use 5W30, where are you located?

If youre in a warm humid area (AZ, TX, SOCAL, ETC), you may want to consider 5W30.

I would NOT RECOMMEND waiting 8K miles.

synthetic = every 5k
regular = every 3k

warm/hot area = 5w30

cool/cool = 5w20

Just a wild guess, but those dealerships are probably reading the owner's manual.

Asking this forum which is the best oil is probably like going to the Middle East and asking which is the one true religion. Search a bit and you'll find lots of opinions. You really need to absorb it all, get a feel for who knows what they're talking about, then make your own choice. I get mine changed at the dealer, who usually uses 5w20. Last time they used 5w30. They use Castrol GTX, which I happen to have been using in all my cars for the past 40 years or so.

Is that 8k miles or km? I think most of us here believe in 3000 mile oil changes.

Ken

I live in Markham, Ontario Canada.
The 8K is in kilometers.
I always felt 5,000 kilometers was a good number.

They cant really recommend anything else cuz someone can make them liable for it.

I would suggest u use at least 5w30. as w20 weight oil cannot provide enough protection for all modern engines. 5w20 was created for fuel economy. Not for the life of your engine

but if u plan to get rid of ur car after a few years then WHO CARES ?
